With the application store for the ipod touch and iphone, full blown movie store with TV shows and rentals...

the iTunes Store is kind of busting out of its name by the seams, is it not?

What is needed here? a new name for iTunes that represents this?

    nothing?

splitting up iTunes into multiple apps?

    Posit.

I don't think they should split it into separate apps that would make things a tad too complicated.
Maybe they should change it's name to iAll, iEverything :p or maybe iEvenhavethekitchensink ;) though I'm guessing they're going to leave it iTunes for the time being.

Edit: wobble987 you beat me tot the iEverything joke :p

    Apple Marketplace?

I figure it will stay iTunes forever. Why change a name that people are already familiar with and is basically a pop culture icon at this point?

    At this point it wouldn't be to Apple's advantage to change the name. The "iTunes" name has become a household word and it doesn't matter if it offers other content besides music. Once the name becomes branded it's a bad idea to change, for example;

Kleenex is the name of the actual company and not the tissue but when we think of tissue used to blow our nose we ask for "Kleenex".
At a restaurant most people will ask for a "Coke" even though the restaurant may serve some generic cola, but we will naturally ask for Coke because the name is synonymous for what it represents, not what is actually is.

    HeheheH :p

yeah i agree, seperating these app would confuse things, thats a no no. changing name is feasable but that just create confusion and dilute the brand.

Exaaaactly!!! Why would Apple change the name of something and then hope everyone remembers it and associates it with the former name. Just a disaster waiting to happen.

Why would they change it? The name is one everyone knows. It doesnt matter if it relates any to what it actually is, the fact that everyone knows the word iTunes is more important. It could be iPoo and if everyone knew it was the apple music player thats all that would matter.

im not saying they should change it.

iTunes is obviously an iconic name at this point and has a tremendous amount of value. Throwing it away just to change the name would be stupid.

Still, in the beginning, iTunes had no music store!, no ipod support! (the ipod didn't exist yet).

And now, iTunes is a huge application. Literally. about 150MB on mac os x. And its name does not well represent its function. I'm not suggesting that they should or will change it from a business perspective. I'm just asking, what should iTunes REALLY be called?

If Apple ever did decide to change the name (which they won't), it should be called iStore.
