Ok is there any way to stop this? I have 15 gig worth of music on my MacBook and iTunes duplicates everything I load into the library so now I have 30gig when I should only have 15. Any thoughts on how to stop this?

I believe you checked off a preference where music is copied onto the iTunes Music folder as well.

    To change this:

Go to iTunes Preferences (you're in OS X, right?).

    Press Advanced and then General.

And uncheck the "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to Library" option.

What I do is organize all my folders myself. I have a folder for each letter of the alphabet. Then I put the bands/artists inside the folders. For me, this is all on an external drive. Then I drag the music folder to iTunes.

I turn off everything automatic, so, I'm in complete control of the organization and basically use iTunes solely as a player with search, sort and play list capabilities.

Used this way, I'm fine with iTunes and it never gets in the way.

My problem is that I have a 500Gig drive with 1300 albums in lossless format. iTunes will sort all by artist, using pc version.

This is not good when artist is across several albums and compilations. I would love a sort by Album for Finder and PC for manual sorting.

Of course when iTunes is running you have several sorting options, but only via internal database.

Sorry to jump topics on the original OP..

I also have this problem. My music files are in the Purchased folder as well as Music library. I turned that off as specified in this tread, but how do I get all of the files out of the Music library? Or should I just leave it alone?
