is it possible to add some file type to a flash drive / external hard disk to give a nice icon on the desktop for that particular drive when its plugged in? i know how to change the generic icon, but thats not what i want. cheers

Right click on the current icon of the drive, first select the icon file you would like to replace the icon of the drive with, right click and select to Get Info, click on the icon image at the top of the dialog that pops open so that the icon becomes highlighted, press Cmd+C (copy), right click on the drive you want changed and select Get Info, click on the icon image at the top of the dialog that pops open, press Cmd+V (paste).

It will be for that one drive only. If you want to change all icons for a certain file type (which might work for drives), you will have to go through terminal or use some 3rd party tool such as Micon or something.

    I can't believe Budding didn't mention CandyBar.

Great little app, but unfortunately, not free.

Candy bar will change all the icons for the drives, not just the one drive.

@Seshan "Just so you know, Mac is not a acronym, that means it is Mac not MAC. Also It's OS X not OSX, It is pronounced O-S-10. X is the roman numeral for 10"
ok, you are right, Mac is correct, but O-S-s-e-x sounds much better ;)

i gave candybar a trial run, but it only sees hfs drives, ie my install and time machine. it does not see my other ntfs partitions, external backup drive or flash drives.

Candybar is worth it if you like to change icons a lot, and makes it much simpler when dealing with Systems icons that are otherwise a bit of a pain to change.

Another option for managing and changing Mac icons is the free LiteIcon. You can pull icons from CandyBar, IconFactory or elsewhere and then use this to manage all the system icons in one window -- much easier imo than using the folder by folder approach, and the price is right.

Budding gave all the necessary information :D. It will only change that particular drive (so if you plug in two USB drives, there can be two different icons). I used to colour code my flash drives (3 of them) with icons from InterfaceLIFT :p.

OSX is a common accepted way to write out "Mac OS X" for short.
