Hey, it's the first day of my switch and i'm still a little confused with installing programs. If anyone wants to explain the setup or has an article at hand, I'd appreciate it greatly!

Just drag your .app file into your applications folder and your done.
If it's a larger program that comes in a package, then just double click on the package file and it'll install like installShield. -
Great, I just installed firefox. I'm assuming after the installation I can eject the "firefox drive" that's on my desktop?
-
Yes. The drive is a virtual drive, similar to what you'd get if you were using Daemon tools in Windows.
To eject just drag it to the eject symbol in the dock or hit 'apple'-E.
on this note, does anybody know how to get the apple key symbol to appear in text? -
Yes after install the drive can be ejected and you can delete the dmg file if you want.
-
thanks for the replys so far
What is the apple command for ctrl-alt-dlt? -
This is my first day and I'm also having the same problem.
When I download Firefox, it comes as .dmg. I install it and I see the "virtual drive" on my desktop and opened that. I dragged the icon from there to the Dock and it runs fine. But when I delete the .dmg and the "virtual drive", it no longer runs from the icon. What am I doing wrong? -
Command (Apple key) + Alt + Escape gives you the "Force Quit" dialog, which allows you to close an application that has stopped responding. If you meant some other use of Ctrl+Alt+Del, please specify.

Thanks, Starlight, exactly what I wanted.
Is it possible to transport my iTunes collection from my PC to mac? I think it is but the ipod I use is formatted for windows so I am not positive. -
Dragging something to the Dock creates a shortcut on the Dock, it doesn't actually install the program. Drag that icon out of the Dock to the Desktop and let go (it'll go *poof*) to get rid of it.
Re-download Firefox, open the .dmg, drag Firefox.app (or whatever the name is) to your Applications folder. That installs Firefox. Then unmount the .dmg and delete it if you wish, and drag Firefox.app from Applications to the Dock to create the shortcut you wanted. -
You cannot take the music off the iPod, if that's what you mean (well, not without involving third-party programs, that is - I know those programs exist though). I would recommend bringing the music across on an external hd or over the network.
As for the iPod being formatted for Windows, iTunes for Mac will probably say "Hi, I need to format this before I can use it", if nothing else it will certainly ask if you want to sync it with this iTunes library instead of whatever library it is currently synced with. -
Yeah, I have no other choice than to transfer the music back from my external HD to iTunes on my MBP.
Also, thanks for your help Starlight! -
What you actually did is you ran Firefox from the virtual drive, and not from your hard drive.
Open the .DMG file, and the virtual drive will pop up. Drag the Firefox icon to the Applications folder in Macintosh HD (or whatever you named it). Then Firefox is installed. After that eject the virtual drive and delete the .DMG file. -
Another question:
I moved my iTunes folder from my PC to my mac. I replaced it into the iTunes folder and need to know how iTunes can recognize that is where all my music is. I hope that makes sense. All my music is in my music folder but when i load up itunes it's blank. -
stealthsniper96 What Was I Thinkin'?
i tried doing that and it didnt work. luckily for me i had a copy of tunetools(copies music from the ipod) so i did it that way. im pretty sure i have a tutorial to take songs off the ipod somewhere so ill look for it and let you know if i find it.
==edit==
i couldnt find the document with the instructions on it (i mighta forgotten to move it off the old comp) but just search google there are plenty of ways to do it. -
First, make sure that your music is inside the "iTunes Music" folder. That folder resides inside the iTunes folder. The reason for 2 iTunes folders is because the first folder holds your album artwork and music folders. After your music is in the iTunes Music folder then;
Open iTunes.
Go to the top menu bar and hit File-Add to Library-point to the iTunes Music folder and hit Choose.
iTunes will now organize your music files and download artwork if you have an iTunes account. -
Hit these key commands:
Option-Shift-K
You will get this nice symbol.

Not sure what happened, but my Music was all in the iTunes folder but now it is completely missing. All of it. The thing is though, when I look at the bottom of finder it says says that it is all on the hard drive (I can tell because of how many gigs are left). I use spotlight to try to find the music but nothing comes up. Anyone know whats up?
