Well, after much helpful advice from members of this forum, I took the plunge and bought a 17 inch MBP on Ebay yesterday, mid-June 2009 edition with Applecare until 2012.

At first I planned to get Office for Mac, but then I remembered I do some foreign language work (German). In Windows there is something called an "international" keyboard which applies across applications and let's me readily type foreign symbols, e.g. รค.

Is there something like that in Mac's OS? If not, I will not to load Windows on the Mac and use it more often than I had otherwise planned.

If you bring up the on screen keyboard, you will be able to see which characters you can type holding down the Alt or Option key. Alternatively you could plug in an external keyboard, and set the language options accordingly.
