I have bought many items on ebay. Just make sure you check the seller's feedback and history of items. Also, use paypal funding with your credit card to be the safest. In that case, if Paypal can't help you dispute a ripoff, your credit card company can.

I'd never, ever buy a laptop on ebay. You are asking for trouble.

I've heard sooo many stories of laptops being scams on eBay. Be weary of who you're buying from, demand pictures that they've taken of the machine, and if at all possible see it in person.

Yeah... I really wonder why people even go through the trouble. It's not like you are saving loads of money... maybe too much time on their hands... you are reasonably safe with PayPal + credit card in that you can get your money back within the 1st month. But it might still be a stolen machine, or whatever. And given the prices on ebay, whenever I check it's ridiculous.

For example, I searched for the Hitachi 7k200 - now in my MBP - online, and up came a few ebay links, as they do. I followed them and saw the price for this drive over $300. One had just sold for $350! Then I went to newegg.com where the exact same drive was in stock and sold for $250.

As Einstein said - "Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe."

Ebay has gotten a lot better and I am very comfortable with many purchases I make and I have never had an issue. Still I keep my purchases to under $100 U.S. Paypal doesn't reimburse all of your money so it's not worth the risk to spend too much.

I would not buy from ebay...there are many honest people, but there are so many crooks there...just too much hassle. Buy from macmall.com - you get $150 rebate (and free printer and $9 parallels after rebates).
