It should work straight away after plugging it in. What's the printer and what errors are you getting?

That's because you don't need drivers with Macs. You don't need to defrag or worry about a registry either.

Well, I wouldn't say that, Budding ;), but you're right in the sense that you don't have to worry about it. While installing OS X you already installed drivers for almost anything that OS X supports (printers, mice, keyboards, etc.)

Apple's 7th reason why you should get a Mac: No hunting for drivers :D

So yeah, your Dell printer should be recognized right away. Try it.

So instead every Apple comes with 2 GB worth of printer drivers factory-installed to accommodate every known printer brand in existence...just in case :p

I'd rather take the 2 minutes to install the printer drivers when I need it and save the 2GB.

Just one of the reasons you should reinstall OSX when you get your MBP :D

If you do reinstall OS X and get that drive space back, can you go back and find drivers later on to get for the devices you do use? How would you go about doing this?

You can insert the install disk and selectively install drivers and optional software.

If you do a standard installtion of OS X, all drivers will be installed. If you did a custom installation in which you chose not to install the drivers, you can simply put the disc back into your Mac and install them via the wizard.

As said before, most likely you already have Dell drivers installed. Just plug in the printer. What Budding said is in case you did not do a full install of OS X (you chose parts to install), then you would have to install drivers from the OS X Installation Disc.

If OSX for some reason does not have drivers for the printer (which is possible, since Dell tends to be as restrictive about their hardware and drivers--especially printers--as Apple is about its software :p), you can try the Dell website. It may have drivers for its newer models there.

Some older Dell printers are rebranded Lexmarks - you might try Lexmark's website too. This is unnecessarily complicated and risky though, since you might well need to flash the firmware to get rid of Dell's stuff to make it work with Lexmark's drivers again. Definitely research this a bit before trying it :p
