I liked the feel of the glass of iPhone 4, though I didn't like the fact that it was a bit heavy.
The new iPod touch 5 is light and fast , but expensive.
So I was looking at 64gb used itouch4 on eBay, and I see they go for about $150.
If I bought one of those could I put a coat of glass on the backside? If so how?
My ipodtouch1 has been dropped numerous times but it don't break, just being scratched. Does itouch4 work the same way? Does it not need a case like the itouch1?

The aluminum on the back of the 4G iPod touch scratches really easily. Instead of trying to do something as complex as melting glass to the back of the iPod, why not just purchase something like a full body Zagg Invisishield or even just a standard case? I also don't recommend buying the 4G iPod touch as Apple has pretty much phased it out in iOS 6. Although they are still selling the 8GB version, iOS 6 didn't bring anything new to the 4G iPod touch. Well, I think it brought one new feature. The 5G iPod touch offers so many benefits over the 4G iPod touch including the same display on the iPhone 5, an anodized aluminum back that is harder to scratch, a much better rear camera (on par with some point-and-shoot cameras), a better front facing camera, much faster processor, and it currently supports all the features of iOS 6 thus giving it a longer life in Apple's line-up. I don't see the point in spending $150 on something that is (essentially) no longer supported.

Well, I disagree on the "why the 4G touch" part; for the most part, we're just talking about a device that plays back music and video, and a bit of causal games. Aside from Siri and the front-facing camera, I don't see what the differences are between the 4G and 5G (I realize that the screen is slightly taller, but overall it's still a small display). Between my 3G touch and my brother's 5G touch, I don't see what's special about it (he even disabled Siri, so I guess it's just meh).
As for the glass, it's much easier to just have a good case for your ipod. Melting glass and applying it correctly isn't a walk in the park, and will surely void any warranty you have on the device (default or AppleCare, or 3rd party). Another quality case brand I can recommend is CrazyOnDigital (found on Amazon); very sturdy and durable case, and it fits well on whatever device you have (in my case, a Nokia Lumia 900).
is there a way to coat the back of iPod touch 4 with glass?
