Hi there,
Just about to pull the trigger on a macbook pro. How frequent are the whine and video card issues?

I was hoping for pics of laptop destruction
Not that many problems really. You will hear about more problems here, because techies are picky then in the real world as well.
Added for others amusement.

Not only are the problems few and far between(for every case you hear about there's probably a thousand that just fine), but Apples customer service is the best. IF you have a problem, they will fix it.

bought one 4/4
it's been absolutely perfect
highly recommended -
Might want to wait until June if you can. Redesign is probably coming.
-
depends how you view that kind of stuff
as a low-intensity user who didn't want to deal with the growing pains of a 1st generation product, I'd actually prefer this current iteration of the MBP -
Wait, it is going to be a significant update and will be worth it. Once the product comes out and a year from now when the "growing pains" are gone the people who didn't choose to wait when they could afford to are going to be regretting it like some people here...

I'll simply sell my new Penryn 2.4Ghz MBP and buy the next revision to the MBP when it's finally available later this year as long as there is some worthwhile performance upgrade and there aren't a lot of issues showing up in the new revision design. I do this every year. I rarely keep a product more than 6-12 months unless there just isn't anything noticeably better available. The longer you hang on to something the less it's worth. I don't lose a ton of money doing this either because I try to make sure I pay below MSRP and try to sell at the best time.

I thought that wasn't going to be until August; since the last macbook pro was released at the end of Feb.
-
so it won't be waiting til june 2008
it'll be waiting til june 2009
that's probably too long for someone who's about to pull the trigger on a laptop purchase april 2008 -
FOr a product to be released late summer or even early winter, "growing pains" will stop by early next year. And if someone is "ready to pull the trigger on" a MBP doesn't mean they can't do without it for a little while longer. I am just offering a recommendation, it is up to the OP to take it or not.
