i just bought a macbook off ebay from a really reputable seller. cant do a clean install though. im paranoid about keylogger software. are these the normal processes? i installed transmission. it looked like a clean install. also is there a cmd hack to rename the home folder?

all those look normal... but if there is a keylogger its not going to be running under your user account, so you need to look at other processes, not just your own.

Your better off just doing your own fresh install though... you didn't say what versions your using there, but if it was me I'd buy 10.7 for $29.99 on the App Store and make a boot disc from it so you have one and can do your own install.

You can probably find 0SX 10.6 disks on eBay for $20.

Won't Apple also send you new installation discs if you lost them? I don't think it would hurt to send them an e-mail. OS X 10.6 is pretty inexpensive though. I did a quick check on Amazon and it is available from 3rd party sellers ranging from $30-$45 so you should be able to find an even less expensive (legit) copy on eBay for ~$20.

Given the background image in the original post, it looks like Snow Leopard is installed. So if they wanted to perform a clean install prior to entering information into their Apple account (such as a credit card number for the Mac App Store to buy Lion), they would have to buy Snow Leopard first unless they wanted to download Lion on someone else's Mac, burn the bootable DVD, and install it on their system. Then again, it has been 3 months since the OP commented on their own thread.

You are very, very, INTENSELY concerned about having a keylogger. Keylogger. Keylogger.

Don't be. Stop worrying about it. It's safe to say you don't have a keylogger ( KEYLOGGER).

First off, we know nothing about your Macbook. If you click the apple in the top left and go "about this Mac" it will tell you everything we need to know.

the likelihood is relatively low and constant, but if the costs are particularly high (maybe this person could face a destroyed career over leaked information - who knows) then it might be worth investigating.

We know the risk is relatively low (but it's certainly not difficult or impossible) - but it's hard to make a valuation on this without understanding what the OP stands to lose.

I would recommend finding OS X 10.6 discs and doing a reinstall. This shouldn't be difficult.
