    macbook What port is behind the headphone port?

    There is the headphone port and then a port that looks just like it before the first USB port. What is it? Is it used for a different type of speaker or something?

    Audio In, you're talking about. That's for sending audio into the MacBook, instead of outputting it like for headphones.

    The Line in port on Macbooks are SPDIF In. I do not believe the headphone port is SPDIF.

    Both the input and output are combined analog+digital. You can find the required adapter/cable to take advantage of the optical part by Googling for "mini toslink".

    both are digital. they will detect whichever cable is plugged in, and shoot out/in the signal accordingly.
