my macbook used to shut down and such just fine. I started using the sleep mode more by just closing the lid and now it won't shut down. I held the power button down and forced a shutdown and that worked. When it powered back up I tried restarting it and it still refuses to restart or shut down. What could be wrong with it?

Something is not closing probably. One that can get me is Firefox will not close with multiple tabs without verification and OS X will not shutdown before all programs are closed. Take a look and make sure every program is closing, whichever one isn't is your culprit.
