first time holding a macbook today at uni, man i have to say for such a thin laptop it was around 12 inch, it was SO heavy, i was totally shocked, i thought the aluminum used in the unibody was meant to be light.

You can take out a lot of screws...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1270

The Thinkpads are a good bit lighter w/ the 13" MBP slotting in between the 14" T410s and the T410 w/ the 13" X301 being 1.2lb lighter. Given the lighter ones are mostly carbon fiber and magnesium I'd venture they're as durable as any unibody MBP. My ancient work Thinkpad is over 5yrs old now from its manufacture date and doesn't even have a scratch on it despite daily dockings and being taken home every night.

My MacBook Pro is 4.5 pounds. Sure, it has some heft, but many notebooks of this class are even heavier.

I think it's because the MacBook is denser than most notebooks, giving it the impression that it is heavier than most notebooks.

    4.7lbs is heavy?

That's lighter than a 4-pack of beer bottles which most people consider almost weightless.

    A 11-yr-old girl I know thinks a 9-10lb laptop is light...
You are officially not even half as strong as a 11-yr-old girl.

You know its time to hit the gym when...

The MacBook is pretty light for its size. But also why do people care how heavy a computer is? My MacBook could be 10lbs and it wouldn't have any effect on its portability.

weight matters a lot to some people... not everyone is like you, needs are not all the same.

my 15" MBP is at the limit for size and weight for me, smaller and lighter would be nicer...

13" macbook? great size and not even close to heavy... most laptops of the same size are heavier.

weight counts alot, i dont need to lug 10lbs to do spreadsheet work and photoshop honestly 4lbs is light, 6 lbs is heavy for a laptop already imo, to be portable has to be light too

Yeah I have the little-over-4lb 13" macbook from last year. It's pretty heavy to carry around, and it's heavier than it's looked like.

Seriously people, get your wimpy butts off the couch and do some exercise! It's no wonder the whole nation is full of fat slobs!

If a 4lbs MacBook can beat you, I think you have some very serious problems.

my mac weighs 2.4kg. I find it to be pretty portable (i can hold it single handed without any probs). The aluminum feels pretty solid. I held a friend's vaio the other day and i felt as it it was going to break in my hands. i prefer solidity to weight.

Wow, out of all the descriptions i'd give for my Macbook.....heavy was not one of them. My little sisters HP for college is 2+ pounds on mine and I never hear her complain. I guess to each there own, but I can't imagine calling it... "heavy".

But isn't that the argument behind the iPad? Laptops/Netbooks are too heavy so you have to carry an extra device between the phone and the laptop that can only be a subset of functionality the (iphone + notebook) combo can already accomplish given most people are going to have to carry both?

Nevermind that the iPad + case is halfway to the weight of a MBP or Thinkpad which you inevitably still have to own b/c you've got to be in kindergarten if the productivity capabilities of the iPad are sufficient as your only machine.

The MBP is midrange on the scale of 13" computers w/ optical drives when you factor in its 1200-1500+ price tag. The T410s from Lenovo is lighter and includes a 14" screen. The Dell Latitude 13" E4300 starts at $1700 sticker but includes a 3yr warranty at 4lb w/ 6 cell. The X301 is even lighter but certainly more expensive. The Sony Z also blows away the MBP on weight in this category. This is b/c although aluminum is fairly light...magnesium and carbon fiber are certainly lighter.

Sure it's tons lighter than the $500 all plastic/lead tank you can buy at Costco but we're talking about $1000+ productivity machines here so cost club throwaways don't really count since they're apparently built of some depleted uranium/soda bottle composite. That said you can get a mighty fast Acer Core i5 based machine for under $600 that has more processor than your avg $1700 MBP if portability isn't too critical (w/a 2 yr warranty no less).

I'm not here to argue why people buy the iPad/netbook, I have no use for one myself. The argument here is calling something 4lbs as "heavy"? If peoples small children can use laptops up to a couple pounds heavier and not complain, an average teenager/adult should have no problem using a 4lb laptop is all.

As people are joking, if thats too heavy for you an exercise regimen may be in order. :p

They don't, weights not a huge part of apple.com/mac. 10 lbs was just an exaggeration, +/- 2 lbs doesn't really mean much. Honestly my mac doesn't fell much different that my 8 lbs 17inch laptop. Sure its real light, but it wouldn't bother me if it was 5 or 6 lbs. It's the thinness, size, and battery life that makes it portable. It might be important to some people, but to most people the weight doesn't make of break the laptop like the OP is trying to insinuate. I'd much rather my laptop be strong, then flimsy and light. Some electronics even have weights in them to make them seem like they have more substance.

Seems like my comment saying Go lift weights it's not that heavy was deleted, but it looks like enough people here said the same thing ;)

Seriously, it's not that heavy, every time I go to pick up my 15inch mbp I over lift it because I'm expecting it to be heavier XD

It's all relative now, isn't it? If OP thinks it's heavy, then it is.

Solution: get a new laptop or practice lifting it over and over.

why are you guys so quick to tell me to hit the gym? this is not bodybuilding.com forum?

why are you guys comparing a laptop to a dumbbell? all i am saying is that the macbook was thinner than my thinkpad, but much heavier and i was surprised by it. I saw this shiny futurist looking thing, thought it would light because it was thin as, pick up... wow. and want to know what might be have contributed to the weight.

and weight is important to me as i prefer portability and long battery life, otherwise i wouldn't have bought a 12 inch in the first place.

You don't have to be a bodybuilder to have basic physical fitness.

Heck, you don't even need a gym OR weights.

    Pushups
    Crunches
    Bodysquats
    goodmornings
    hyperflexes (superman's)
Yardwork (great for biceps with all the pulling)
    walking
    jogging

The better shape you are in, the easier it is to carry items.

Many of the aches/strains of carrying usually are due to a weak core more than anything else. Goodmornings/crunches/bodyweight squats/ leg lifts will fix that rather quickly.

Of course at a gym you get a better outlet, much better eye candy ;), and more options including diversity of freeweights/machines, cardio equipment and usually a court to play pickup Bball games.

Timbuk2 messenger bags are excellent for laptops. The straps are adjustable, comfortable and they really sit properly in the small of your back/tush area. I've switched away from shoulder bags and backpacks to messenger bags and they not only make it easier to carry your laptop and gear, but they are quickly accessible.
