how does the MBP wear and tear?
i know the white MBs are a joke , you can rub your fingernail on them and it will scratch
what about the pros?
im thinking about getting the new penryn MBP
-
Naw, the MacBook is not bad. My MacBook does get slightly dirty but a few rubs with a wet cloth and its gone. The issue with the discoloured palmrests was recognized by Apple and you can get your MacBook serviced if the palmrests get discoloured like that.
The MBP generally is good in terms of wear and tear. It is made of aluminum though, so it does dent if you crash it against things constantly. Getting a sleeve generally solves this problem unless you are prone to dropping things.
-
I am coming up on year with my MBP, and aside from a few scratches that were my fault, it looks as good as the day I got it. If you care for them, they will hold up very well.
-
Had my MBP for a month (although I sent it back for an exchange since it wobbled... so I'll be getting a shiney new one soon...) but from the time I spent with it, it was pristene except for a scratch cause by a zipper on my carry bag
But it is recommended you don't put a lot of weight on the area your wrist/palms rest on. I've seen reports that the panelling over the latch button starts to bulge out due to a long time of putting too much weight on that area.
-
so the pro scratches even with it being aluminum?
and to sam
I had a core2duo macbook for a while and it just scratched way too easily, on the palmrest, clicker button, top case was a joke, it was covered with scratches -
the only thing I miss on my macbook was its battery life
I easily got 4 hours on that thing -
It can scratch since there's some kind of matte finish to the MBP. In terms of battery life I got nearly 6 hours with my 17" MBP on lowest brightness, but that's just doing light surfing, and talking on MSN. Using the wireless airport card to connect though. So it's pretty good.

The MBP is very well built. If you scratch it, it will scratch, but if you treat it properly it will be fine. I carry mine in a neoprene sleeve which keeps scratches away.
I also have to say - which notebook out there doesn't scratch? I have never cared about scratches on any of my PC notebooks but that's not because they don't scratch, that's because they don't look good enough for it to matter. The flawless designs that Apple puts out makes scratches stand out far more. -
-
The palm rest can also pit heavily too.
-
yea if I spend $2000 on a laptop I want it to be somewhat durable
my xps 1330 doesnt scratch at all -
I've been using mine heavily in school since august, and it still looks brand new. It gets banged around quite a bit, too, even though I am super careful with it.

I was overly concerned about my brand new MBP getting pits and discoloration on the palm rests and trackpad. I bought the Invisishield full body cover to help keep it looking new...

That is what I got. I bought the Full shield and installed them all except for the trackpad and the button. -
"If it can protect helicopter blades spinning at hundreds of miles per hour, imagine what the invisibleSHIELD can do to protect your MacBook Pro 15 inch while in your pocket!"
lol, that must be one big pocket....
But yeah, that looks like a pretty good product, especially if they honor their warranty.
I'm just wondering how it works. Is it just a film you stick on the case? If so, is it easy to get off once it's on? -
-
yea the only things i've seen is from the C2D mbp's after a while their trackpad gets discoloured from use, and sometimes the palmrest.
But thats after 2-3 years of use, and I dont think the current MBP will start to show anything anytime soon. -

To apply was pretty straightforward. I had to remove a few times just to get it right in terms of removing air bubbles and misalignment but still easy to do. I have not tried to remove it since but it looks like it would take some force to get it off.

FYI, DO NOT wear a wrist watch while using your brand-spanking-new MBP!
MBP Care, Use, and Safety Information -
No that isn't my laptop. It's just a picture I found elsewhere describing the problem. My own palmrest isn't quite so bad - there are small individual spots of pitting that aren't noticeable unless you're looking close, but they do exist.
I'm going to assume it's from the corrosive effects of sweat, oil and the like though. My MBP tends to run pretty hot, and my palms sweat a lot.
Here's another one:

(Comic relief)
-
@OP: I guess I'm a non-corrosive kinda guy; my machine doesn't have any scratches or pitting, thankfully. -
