I bought a used macbook from my sons friend. He put a password for the admin. and can't remember it.I am not able to download anything.
My question is,is reformatting my only option? And if so,I'm not sure how to do it.

Insert the OS X installation disc, reboot your Mac while holding the C key, keep holding down the C key until the disc language menu comes up, and follow the instructions.

if you haven't formatted yet, you may be able to boot to that disc and use one of the utilities to change the admin password.

you don't need your son's friends files.

just do the reformat. you have all the instructions you need. the rest is easy. just select "erase and install" when the time comes.

Yeah, you might as well have a clean start so you don't have anything you don't want taking up space or running in the background.
