Same here. I'm about to pull the trigger and buy a MBP so I'm a little worried.

I would wait just before you do. I'm pretty sure more news will come out of this and apple's so close into updating the current mbp with the montevina with ATI cards.

Yeah good idea - I'm not in a hurry anyway, my good ole iMac is still working like a charm. Been reading about this issue all over the net and I guess the safest bet is to wait for Apple to change the MBP's GPU.

Although I hope its not as bad as it seems. It must be quite a scare for those laptop owners with nvdia cards.

But so far, I haven't seen a 17 incher MBP with a overheating problem.

Yea tell me about it~ I saw the news and instantly it was a surprising kick to the crotch!

Anyways, funny that you mention that I havnt seen a 17" mbp owner with any gpu issues either (last years 2.4ghz non led model as well as this years).

I remember on barefeats.com that they mentioned the 17" mbp's having a much bigger and more efficient heat sink that allows the gpu to clock higher.

I'm guessing since apple underclocks the card a bit anyways, maybe the 17" mbp's heat sink is more than doing its job. (crossing fingers!).

Also new update.. seems like alot of dell m1330 and m1530 owners with the nvidia 8400m GS are having the most failure rate (which I think the finger is really being pointed at) but you should just wait it out at least a month just to make sure either the 8600m gt are fine or the new mbp is released (probably the latter).

i do have an issue with the graphic card (novemember 2007 17"MBP)... eg. when playing .mpg (movie) files in quicktime and resize it quickly on quick succession (large, small, large, small) the macbook would just froze, no mouse movement, no nothing, the fan all kick in high, i had to forced shutdown, a guy i talk to in other computer forum, did have the same problem, he says after the recent GPU firmware/driver update, seems to solve the problem, i have not dare try that again..

ive been doing a research on the apple MBP on the apple forum, and it seems at the worst, ppl are getting GPU: 50/90 (rounded) idle load.. which is not too bad.

but personally i dont think my computer is too hot (temperature wise).

i found this website for CPU, its been there for a while; just thought u guys might be interested.

There's really no guarantee that Apple is going to use ATI GPUs in the next MBP. Personally, I hope they go with nVidia if they can put a higher-end GPU like the 9650M GS which is a shrunk 8700M GT or preferably a 9700M GT which has double the stream processors at 64. It's too much to expect a high-end 9800M series in the MBP, but either of the above upper-mid-range GPUs would be quite nice and should be faster than ATI's upper-mid-range Mobility HD 3670.

In terms of affected GPUs I don't think that people can just say it's a 8400M GS or a 8600M GT. It's probably only for certain batches of GPUs, which is probably why nVidia doesn't confirm which are affected since it's not the whole line. I believe the problem as to do with the packaging material not the GPU die itself. I would hope at least that current batches of MBP's aren't affected, since it'd be crazy if nVidia is still shipping and selling defective GPUs.

Edit: I should have said the 9700M GTS is preferable since that appears to be the one with more stream processors, although I'm no longer sure how many more. The 9700M GTS is based of the G94 core which is used on the desktop 9600GT and contains 64 stream processors, but it appears as though only 48 will be enabled for the 9700M GTS. The 9700M GT seems to still be G96 based with 32 stream processors, just clocked higher than the 9650M GS/8700M GT.

We've had several notebooks come in with bad graphics cards, of the nVidia variety, at my work, but none of them were Apples, just fyi.

    very interesting conclusion itcommander :).

i thought about nvidia still "selling defective GPUs".. i thought that they were probably finish selling the 8series gpu and now already starting to sell 9series.

they are not doing a good job in public relation department are they :)
