some suggestions for a newish mac user.
i have a whole ton of free apps in the /Applications folder now. the names are mostly obscure and 'esoteric' (to a windows user)
i have a plan to make folders under the Applications folder called eg. Graphics, CD and DVD, Office etc. as thats how is have always worked.
is that the way to go to organise myself,
    other suggestions welcome...

Reverse alphabetical by the third letter in the second syllable. Very efficient. Highly recommended.

Seriously, whatever works for you. Just remember that the odd app wants to be directly in the applications folder. If its not, it may act weird and may not update. But you can just keep an eye out for that.

I make folders, but I leave my apps in /Applications

You make folders for all the main apps you want access to, that you use the most, in whatever type of folder names you want... (main apps, utilities, games, etc..) then you put aliases of the programs you want in those folders (named whatever you want them named), then put links to those folders on the right side of the dock. Works good for me.
