I have just switched from the PC universe. I hunted around, but could not find a way to have a password required at start up as had been the case with my Thinkpad. I logged out as a user before i shut down, but the computer just came on normally when i turned it back on. It is possible to require a password at start up?

Go into system preferences and security.
It does make the boot up a little bit longer though, just because you have to log in and stuff. -
Unfortunately Macs do not have a BIOS password which is what I believe the OP is referring to. The only password option would be upon logging into OSX, which is the same as logging into Windows.
