I HATE Mail.app with IMAP. The implementation is really poor. I just use the web interface and then the IMAP for the iPhone. Another option is Thunderbird.

I asked because it works perfectly for me. I'm on Mail.app and gmail, and everything is happy. I set up a local folder and rules for moving mail to it, and logged back into gmail's web interface to see it updated exactly as I wanted it. It's also retrieving mail on some interval or other.

How about the "Advanced" tab under the gmail account in Mail's preferences? It's got checkboxes for the account being enabled and included in the check for new mail.

If that is the case, that would be a compelling reason to upgrade to Leopard. I have always found Mail.app's support for IMAP to be below that of Thunderbird.

    Eh...I didn't notice much difference...?

I mean the folders are there, and most of the behaviors work the way they're supposed to....

But then again, I only really started using multiple IMAP accounts when GMail went IMAP - and that was like 3 days before Leopard came out so I didn't have a whole lot of time to play around with it in Tiger.
