The new safari 4 is up, albeit still in beta. So for ppl who like to take risk and try out new things, click away.

It has a nice new look in windows that blends with the os better but at the same time still too buggy for normal use.
-
Cool! Rep added!
-
THAT LOOKS TOTALLY AWESOME!!
One issue I ran into with last windows version was the Apple version of "Cleartype" made things impossible to read, and Safari kept freezing anyone have screenshots of beta 4? -
and all four Safari users worldwide go crazy
just kidding, looks pretty sweet. as long as it isn't just all eyecandy... -
Gorgeous but buggy and slow cold start-up
. Worse than Chrome in early beta
.
-
the topsites thingie is kinda sluggish right now, havent tried other new features yet. Although I love how they finally include the autocomplete on the google search, now i can uninstall the inquisitor.
-
When I close it on x64 Ultimate it stays in task manager and takes my CPU to 100 %.
Finished removing it now. -
Seems to be running quite well on my mac.
Not sure if I like the tabs at the top thingo... but im sure I'll get used to it.
Speed is good and so far no crashes or excessive cpu usage... but its only been 1h.

+1 on the tab issue.
Is there anyway we can disable the recent searches on the google column? -
This is one good improvement as yet seen on the Safari browser:
- Windows:
. quick, smoother and better rendering (but then again, it is always good at screen presentation)
. note: recommending that quicktime plug in and flash to be up-to-date. Some CPU spikes seem to disappear after this has been done.
- OSX:
. better, still has some quirks in streaming video clips. Expect to see some updates coming from Leopard.
Personal note: recommend!
cheers ... -
so far so good...
-
hopefully we can era the history
-
they finally added a "new tab" button
-
And what environment were you "trying" this Safari 4 Beta out?
Care to expand the "buggy" statement?
The "slow cold start up" can be very much applied to other browsers now and then.
In what ways?
- Faster? probably so
- Buggy? last I see, Chrome is still working, plugging many deficiencies, with "beta" versions coming out galore. But please do be specific, for us all to share and take notes.
cheers ... -
Cannot duplicate on my Ultimate 64bits, on my slow eMachines M6805. Opened along with FF and IE, MS Word in the background.
Care to share your comp's status and position at this particular "close" time? I might have missed something.
cheers ... -
Have a look in my sig and tell me if you "missed something". I love the new Safari 4 look but...
1. Cold start, same as firefox, twice as slow as Chrome.
2. I want to save preferences, it crashes on me.
3. I close it...I check the taskmanager...safari32.exe is still there chewing up memory and keeping my laptop at 100%.
4. It behaves like an Alpha. -
using it on OS X its working pretty well.. the new tab button really made a difference for me.. and everything works smooth so far.. you can delete the history by "resetting" safari in the safari menu.. under private browsing...
-
Holy crap what an improvement! I never really liked Safari except for its overall snapiness and super smooth scrolling.
I am a Firefox add-ons junky, bud my god, this is good stuff, the homescreen is gorgeous, bookmarks are amazing, and the Developer tools are the best I have ever seen.
Didn't see this coming, I have had no issues with it at all so far, incredibly fast, like very very fast.
Darn good stuff Apple.
SafariBlock! Using the Adblock plus block list, Fixed open in Tab Functionality, FullZoom, holy wanker every single thing I didn't like about Safari they have fixed. Did I work on this? How did this happen? -
Cool, create a thread in Windows OS and related. This is Apple Mac area. No need to troll here.
But as a quick reply, based on my eMachines:
- Cold start: based on the previous Safari version, it is great improvements. OP thread is not about Safari vs others. Dont hijack it.
- Save preferences: cannot duplicate it. How about a clean install?
- CPU spike: care to share the status and position of your comp? Other apps in background, AV?
- Alpha? Have you compared this Safari version with previous Safari versions?
cheers ... -
Wow! Impressive and good thing they changed the theme in Windows to be Vista like.
-
I can see you are an apple user...the most arid fields will flourish in your presence. -
Safari 4 is amazingly fast and the top sites feature is pretty cool.
-
Yeah it is pretty fast. I like the tabs and the interface which are very similar to Chrome but not as good IMO. It also seems to use a lot of memory (at least double) comparing to both Firefox and Chrome.
-
Works great for me since I got it.
Really fast, snappy and I haven't had a freeze or anything like that yet. -
i guess the consensus so far is that safari 4 is almost ready for prime time for Mac, and still quite a bit of work for to do for Windows.
-
I am an avid Windows, Unix and OS X user.
I constantly look and search for improvements in all OSs and their related apps.
I don't put down OSs/Apps with shortcomings that are improving as time goes.
And I certainly don't put down OSs/apps without reviewing the history of their developments/versions.
Still, the above statements are irrelevant, since they have nothing to do with the OP's thread.
cheers ... -
They are heading the right way, when one compares the very 1st beta version with this current one; saving me a lot of time of cloning and theming on the Windows environment
It is interesting now to see more and more browsers options for users, Mac or Windows. -
I like it actually. The Speed Dial (to use the Opera name for Top Sites) actually works like Opera Speed Dial - press Ctrl+2 and you get your second-most-visited site. Since you can pin stuff, unlike in Chrome, you could use it like Opera Speed Dial. That's a must have feature for me, and this is the first non-Opera browser I've seen to have it.
edit: Actually, that doesn't seem to work. I can't get Ctrl+2 to give me anything other than Yahoo. And Ctrl+4 always gives YouTube. Anyone know how to change this?
edit2: Actually, I can't seem to change any shortcuts. That's one of the major problems I had with Chrome, too. Is Opera really the only browser that makes it easy to customize shortcuts?
Speed is decent, but Minefield (Firefox 3.2 Alpha trunk builds) is much faster. But FF 3.2 Alpha is much faster than anything. Still, it's a whole lot better than IE, and seems close (not sure which is better) compared to FF2 or Opera.
Interface is also much better on Windows - both fonts and appearance.
Scroll speed is slow, though - might be able to change that, though.
Safari 3 on Windows had pretty ugly font that was enough to keep my from using it. But it's perfectly legible in Safari 4. As for screenshots, check out CNet's article.
When I first started it, it didn't load the welcome page properly, and I noticed after a few minutes that my fan was on medium and CPU use was at 50% (full for one core). But once I closed the welcome page, CPU use went back to normal. And the next time I opened that page it loaded properly. But I'm running XP Home x86.
Wow - it does use a lot of memory now that I look. 199,284 KB and I have two Top Site tabs open, GMail, and NBR, and those are the only sites I've visited. Good thing I've got 3.5 GB! -
Anyone else having trouble accessing Gmail? Maybe gears doesn't play nice with the Beta?
-
gmail works fine for me, it's hotmail that i'm having problem with, can't seem to select any messages in hotmail.
-
Same problem here, apart from this issue Safari 4 is amazing!

So far... so great
-
Well, the tabs above is a big plus for me - I'm all about real estate.
Question: Is there a way to customize the "Bookmarks Bar" to show favicons like in Firefox. If so - I'm switching to Safari. (In Firefox I have all my bookmarks lined up as favicons with only a "." as a description. I find these "buttons" waaaay easier to use than a bunch of monotone gray letters.) -
I am also switching to safari since I don't use any extensions in firefox anyway.
-
It's been great so far... Except for the refresh button. I wish they would have left it up where it used to be...
-
I love it!! it is fast much faster than Firefox.
-
The feeling I got from Safari 4 was that it starts to do what other browsers already have been doing for some time. And it is definately still beta, some objects on some sites refuses to load, scrolling can be a bit jerky sometimes, etc, compared to Safari 3.
-
Safari 4 works very well for a beta. I haven't had any crashes or hangs since I installed it day one. To be honest, I haven't used much of Safari 3 due to little issues here and there like bogging down, weird rendering of pages, etc. Firefox seemed to do a better job. As of now S4 has replaced Firefox as my full time browser. I can't say much more than that.
-
Anyone has any luck with hotmail and safari4 so far?
-
I'm loving it so far. VERY fast, and the Top Sites menu is awesome.
I did have an issue, however, accessing www.citibank.com earlier. It'd let me login to my unified Citicorp accounts homepage, showing my checking, savings, investments, and IRA account, but when I clicked on each one to get specific transactions/account information, it wouldn't do anything.
Doesn't seem to be doing it now, but it seems to be an issue with Safari 4, as it did the same on my friend's MacBook, but not in Firefox or Safari 3. -
on my laptop running win 7 safari beta 4 doesn't render facebook nor youtube well. the top headers in facebook and youtube don't show up at all (even though i can still do everything else on the websites).
anyone else having this problem? I thought it might've been a flash issue but i can watch youtube videos.. -
Have you tried browsing the W7 sub-section for some input? Rendering under W7 still has a few hiccups, not just with
browsers.
cheers ... -
Anybody else having trouble syncing mobile me bookmarks? I've synced three times yet they don't show up. Yes, I chose replace data on computer.
-
No problem with Mobile Me syncing on the Mac side. I just installed S4 in Fusion and it synced with Mobile Me just fine.
-
No problems on the mac side for me either. I have xp on another computer and it won't sync.
-
It is very fast, almost as fast as Chrome, but I am back using Firefox after a day or so. I don't really like how it doesn't tell you anything when it is loading. Maybe I am missing it but on firefox the little circle starts spinning on the tab when it is loading a new page whereas on Safari it just seems to pre-load and then jump to the next site automatically and I have no warning. Sometimes I accidentally click a link and don't even know I have done so. If someone could show me an icon that I am missing that would be great.
Another thing I wish they would change is the tab position. I didn't like how Chrome put the tabs at the top because when they are up there you cannot have a title bar, which I like. Safari puts the tabs up there too.
Are either of those things customizable? The speed is awesome and I would gladly switch back if I could change those two things. -
Safari is fast, faster than FF; as fast as Chrome.
But besides the speed, nothing theyve changed has impressed me. The top sites feature has animations and is slow. The address bar plus buttons are all very small, i'm running 1440x900 res and everything is tiny.
The whole mac-esque gray everything is also a boring boring design.
I still dont know how to add a tab because add tab and minimize are the same button for some reason. Maybe thats a beta bug. -
I personally like Safari 4 and I find how to put the tab in the bottom instead on top.
I always like the tab in the bottom of the address bar instead of top -
Is there any way to set it where when you click on a link, it will bring it up in the same window, or in a new tab?
safari 4 beta is up
