I have had my 2008 unibody macbook for sometime now. 3 weeks ago there was a clunking sound in the fan constantly. picture a Ford Model T sound like " dugdugdugdugdug" or something i cant explain the sound.

suddenly today it got a ton worse. now sounds like a lawnmower. Here is a video of someones macbook that sounds EXACTLY like mine.

Unless you're inclined (and capable) to open it up yourself to troubleshoot the issue, your only other choice is to take it to an Apple store (or authorized repair agent) to have it fixed. When dealing with cooling issues, it's best to have it looked at ASAP to prevent any heat related issues from doing more damage.

I opened it up and it's clearly the fan. I'm going to try to lubricate the fan after opening it. I'd that doesn't work, buy a replacement fan for $40

Bearings are probably toast, take it to apple and don't lube it. Specially don't use wd40.

dont try to fix a bad fan of that type... just replace it.

If its not under warranty, you can find replacement fans for cheap. If it is, get Apple to replace it.

I sometimes talk them into sending me non-User replaceable parts so I can do it myself, but it helps that I used to be an Apple Tech (AASP, not an Apple employee) and did warranty work, so they may trust me more, but doesn't hurt to ask.
