i am planning on running windows xp on my mac (dual boot); do you lose control of the fan speed? multi-touch(specifically, right click)? calibration profile?
i can't seem to find it anywhere online.
thank you

mutli-touch gestures should work. two fingers with a click should produce a right click.
not sure about the fan speed. i dont think you can control it in windows, but I havent had any problems with the fan being too loud under vista x64; unless im in games.
not sure if you can calibrate your battery in windows. i dont think so? -
I'm not too sure about the color profile...

usualyl overheating problems have been on some 2.4ghz MBPs and some 2.53ghz MBPs.... if your going into Windows, you can use SMCfancontrol in OSX to up it to like 5000-6000rpm, then reboot (don't shut off, or it'll reset the fans) then boot into Windows and play... but you really shouldn't have a problem with fan control in Windows and overheating, the best way to make sure of that is to turn off your machine, reset your SMC, then turn it on and boot into Windows... and the auto fan control should handle stuff fine for you for that boot no problems... it actually will always handle it before it actually crashes, but I've had my machine wait to spin the fans up at all from bare minimum until the temp got over 200º F... i turn them up manually before it gets to 180º.
and yeah.. multitouch only works for scroll up and down with two fingers and three finger right click (3 fingers? must be a bug, but it works, two wont), and normal mouse moving and clicking. -
i have my cooling pad w/ the notebook always so i am not too concern with heat so long as the room temperature doesn't get accumulated.
there are some games from asia that sounds fun and i want to try; given that they are all for windows... as far as virus is a concern i still have my norton 09 with me and i find it to be adequate.
what else will i be missing? would i be able to change the clock speed of the video card via nvida tuner(or something)? that should solve half the issue i suppose for general purposes.
oh right, does power management function in windows to control optimal power?
ambient sensor?
thank you very much -

What do you lose? A stable system, your sanity, the ability to think rationally, various documents you had saved, and about 30 minutes in battery time.
Hope this helps -
if battery life is down to 30minutes that's likely due from apple's side not giving windows proper control instead of window's issue. the amazing battery life(let's say that) apple has is mainly due from lithium polymer; i am not here to explain good and bad point about li-ion/li-poly anyways.
and as i had said already, i intend to boot camp since i am lazy in switching programs again; i don't want to look for the equivalence windows has from mac(although office 07 is better than mac's variant). -
Do you have to run Windows natively? It might be easier to run a virtual machine instead via VirtualBox (or Parallels or VMware Fusion). VirtualBox is free and might be good enough for your purposes.

my rationale is if i am going to use a few gigabyte on windows i might as well dual boot and play some games on it; games like gears of war and whatever come to mind later. besides games there are probably only a few things i need solely from windows as i have most of the mac-variant programs found and used.
please keep this thread neutral from which is better/worse...
again, thank you for everyone's input. -
I basically just use Windows for games
The trackpad is a little finicky under Windows, and temps seem to be a tad higher, though I use a fan control program when I'm in Mac OS. Really, it works just fine though, and it's good to have a windows installation on your Mac, just in case you need it. I've got to get myself a bigger HDD though- I'm running out of space here -
i will sometime in the future be purchasing a 7200.4 HDD, maybe after setting up a NAS for all the BT that's actually taking up most of my space...
but yes, after my tablet is collecting dust i do feel the need to at least have windows available in case if something go wrong and games are my primary concern for bootcamping windows, especially some chinese games i still enjoy.
program wise i am all set (beside a fully compatible msn) on from OS/X that i use all the time (there, some love to mac, xirug)
what do you lose when running under windows?
