its an add on to the power brick. if you look where the little thing is with the prongs that slides off and the longer cable slides on.

............ do you see on the regular power brick where the 2 prong thing is that pops out to plug into the wall? (or do you live somewhere besides america)
-
It's a cable extender with a ground at the end.
If you look at your power brick, the actual connector part can be removed and replaced with the end of the extender. -
ah, gotcha. Didn't know it came off and could be switched! Thanks

stealthsniper96 What Was I Thinkin'?
sure. theres also 2 little things on the other end that flip out to wrap the cord around. that one took me a while to figure out.
-
Yeah, it's always better to use the one with the ground. If you've ever noticed a buzzing while playing music, try switching to the grounded cord.
Also, be careful when wrapping your cord around the pop-outs, as pulling even a little bit on it will cause the base of the cord to fray. -

yea ive heard that. i give it about an inch of slack b4 i start wrapping it around, and ive been meanin to get some white electrical tape to put around it, but i keep forgettin. -
I've got mine taped up with black tape, kind of tacky, but it was frayed pretty bad before I was able to do it. If I take the tape off soon after having it plugged in you can smell the electricity, so I've got a LOT of tape there.

Is your machine a year old (or do you have Apple Care)? If you machine is still under warranty you need Apple to send you a replacement adapter. If you're not under warranty you need to buy a replacement adapter. The smell is the adapter wires shorting together. You could cause a fire or even brick your MBP. This is something you need to take care of immediately.
-
Yeah, I have apple care. I've been meaning to get a replacement for a while, but work and school have been keeping me pretty busy(as has nbr). It's not the wires shorting out, just the smell of electric heat, which is normal for something like this. The brick generates a lot of heat. And if you've ever seen the inside of one of the mag-safe side of the cord, you'd see that the wires are just twisted in there, so they're not shorting(that's what the tape is for).
-
No, there is no smell that is normal that it should be producing. If it is making a smell, there is a problem.
And yeah, there is a known problem with the older magsafes melting and smoking. I was one of the people who had that happen. The end doesn't even need to be very fraid at all. Tape won't do anythign to prevent it from shorting.
Call apple if you really do smell it. There are a lot of people who have had their magsafes melt... lucky, mine did it in the middle of class, and not while I was asleep. -

I agree with the others. There is definitely something wrong with the cable. You shouldn't make NBR your top priority!

oooooh, i liiiiiike. Perhaps NBR should put its name on a mastercard or american express card...
And then give me Leo for free... I swear unlike Sam's, my macbook is totally legitimate.
