(i'm a mac newb)
the latest mac OS is "OS x" right?
what program do people use to monitor temperatures in a mac? (list all possible)
is it free?
-
iStat Pro.
-
The latest Apple OS is OS X 10.5 Leopard (10.5.5, if you want to be specific).
OS X is the general name for this current "generation" of Apple operating systems. Each version of 10.x is a different operating system though.
For example, 10.5 is Leopard, 10.4 is Tiger, 10.3 is Jaguar, etc etc. -
OS X is OS "10" really, but just using Roman numerals as it obviously looks better.
I back iStat Pro, and if you decide to use SMCFanControl to control fan speeds, that also monitors temperatures! -

I use SMCfan Control for temperatures - it can be located in your menu bar.
-
Yea like people say, smcfancontrol and istat pro.
smc fancontrol is always in my menu bar showing my cpu temp & fan speed.
istat pro is in my dashboard, and can display all the other temps that I want to see, if i want to see them. (basically you can choose what temps you wanna see and what you dont want to) -
Does iStatPro work on the new aluminium MacBooks?
-
-
Have a look also at iStat Menus; it's like iStat Pro, but you can have the information on the menu bar instead of the dashboard.
-
iStat Pro and SMC Fan Control (exhaust)
-
iStat Pro, Fan Control and SMC Fan Control, Fan Control is great and really underrated, better than SMC because it lets you set your own gradient.
-
iStat pro is a wonderful program. I'm a self-proclaimed noob when it comes to how computers work but iStat pro makes it easy for "folk like me"
-
I use both
-
I use both. I like them both because istat pro because it is convenient to be in the dashboard and has all kinds of stats in it and i like smc fan control because you can keep it in your tool bar so it is right there on the screen if you need it for some reason.
-
I would also suggest iPulse, not the most popular, but keeps a little graphical indicator in the bottom right corner of your screen which shows the status of your computer graphically.
-
something like iStat pro is good, a widget is a good idea because it is there but it never is distracting you directly from what you are actually doing.
definitely keep in mind that the more little apps like this that you run and as convenient as they may be they can start being a fairly large drain on system resources. so only use the ones that are absolutely necessary for you.
