if anyone has been following my other threads, i'm actually leaning more towards getting a mbp or mb than i was before. there's one thing i'm still torn with, though. the screen.

everyone has been saying how great the mbp screen is, however i seem to remember threads here or in some forum complaining about macbook screens looking washed out or blurry compared to the pc competition. since i haven't heard that in my threads on this board, i thought i'd start a new one to see if anyone here actually thinks that way.

so does anyone think apple makes subpar washed out screens? or it something that only applies to non-LED screens? or do those people just dislike macs?

(btw, my front running contenders have been the mbp vs the sony fz (with xbrite-hicolor screen). the former has much much better battery life, which is why i'm leaning towards switching, but the latter has a great screen and i wouldn't have to learn a different operating system.)

Is there a reason you can't get access to a MBP or MB and a Sony FZ to see for yourself?

Anyone else's opinion on this subject really doesn't mean a thing since you'll be the one who ends up using the machine at the end.

    taelrak is right!!

I find the screen good (MBP, non-LED) but your mileage may vary. Matte or glossy also makes a big difference but neither is better. I prefer matte. All subjective!

well, i've seen them in their respective stores. i guess i just left the stores without a clear idea of which i like more. and i guess i'm asking you guys because maybe seeing the notebook screens at home is very different than seeing them in the abnormal store lighting conditions.

I sold Acer, HP, Asus and Mac laptops. I bought a MBP. Mainly for OS X stability in audio applications, but partly because I prefered to work at it, screen included. I can't vouch for the Sony though.
There is (or at least was in the older versions) a pretty big difference in the MB and MBP screens. The MBP was ALOT nicer. Some negative reviews might be because of the MB screens.

I would still rather buy a MB than a similarly priced Win machine....

The reason most people say that Mac screens look blurry is because OS X handles text differently. OS X works to preserve the actual font, even if that results in blurry looking text, whereas windows goes for strict readability, and often times obliterates the true form of certain fonts.

Apparently MacBookPro can come with two different screens, either LG or Samsung, some people claim that the LG colors look washed out, personally i have seen a MBP with an LG at the Apple stores, and the colors didn't look washed out at all.
I also believe that can be due to a different color calibration, but i am a newbie in the mac world, maybe some experts can explain that better!

The older Powerbooks and iBooks had somewhat lousy screens. They were matte, washed out, and dim. The 12" iBook and 12" PB were particularly bad. The MB has one of the nicest screens you will see in notebook. It isn't washed out at all. It doesn't have the widest viewing range but unfortunately that is the status quo these days with all notebook OEMs (including Sony). The LED MBP's also have excellent displays. IMHO they don't look quite as nice as the MB but they are brighter. Same issue with viewing angle as the MB.

I have an LG LED screen on my MBP (glossy) and I love it. It isn't very reflective either, compared to other glossy screens. I was originally going to get matte but the quality of the glossy really impressed me. Definitely go check the screens out in person if you can, since screen quality can be very subjective.

Most ridiculous thing ive heard. Nothing wrong with any MBP screen i've seen. Stop worrying and just get it.

ooOoOoo so that's what it is. I noticed that the text appeared different on osx. Man I love my MBP... so far (it hasn't even been a week).. but yeah.. its good.

And for the OP, imo the MBP screen is really gooood. Super bright, and NOT washed out.. I mean, have you seen the desktop background of the clown fish in the green anemone?? c'mon.. it's good. Do it, do it, rum and cola.

does that mean you see the text as blurry when you're typing documents?

You can make the text slightly easier to read in the System Preferences. Reserving this space for an edit when I boot back into OS X and remember what to do.

EDIT: Go to System Preferences, then Appearance. At the bottom is a drop-down selector for Font Smoothing. I find "Standard - Best for CRT" is the easiest to read for me, personally. Fiddle around with it and find a good selection for you.

actually, it does. ha ha. but i'm sure that doing a screen shot and then portraying it on a message board through my monitor isn't quite like having your computer.

Font rendering in general looks good, just different to Win.
Far superior to Linux (at least on Gnome, anyways)
I didn't really know exactly why, thanks system_159

I did think my Macbook screen seemed a little bit washed out. I changed the gamma from 1.8 to 2.2, and it looks nicer to me. The vertical viewing angles are slightly annoying too. I don't think it's unusually bad, by any means, just status quo.
