I believe when Steve Jobs did the keynote introducing the first unibodies he mentioned that the white macbook was their top seller and they'd continue to sell it.
Considering they wanted to move to the unibodies, they had to eliminate one model (the least popular of the plastic books) so they axed the black macbook.
It wouldn't have made sense at the time to have the white macbook, black macbook, and two models of the unibody macbook. It would just crowd the lineup. -

i think they ran out of them.
anyway, if i remember correctly, the black macbook was around $1400 or more.
now you can get an aluminum 13" macbook pro for $1200.
aluminum > black plastic -
They didn't they just renamed the black unibody to Macbook Pro 13".
Based on Specs alone they are identical. -
There was never a black unibody. Would be kind of cool though, but I'd hate all the paint chips falling off.
-
They called it black macbook.
Formerly know as Unibody Macbook they renamed it to Macbook Pro 13" -
The unibody macbook was (is) aluminum. The black macbook was plastic. There was never a black aluminum macbook.
-
So you are refering to another Polycarbonate Macbook, I assumed you were refering to the Unibody Macbook that was renamed.
-
It was not only renamed, it was redesigned. No more loose battery cover.
-
Loose battery cover was a design flaw not improvement

I'm going to assume that English isn't your first language.

I believe the OP was referring to the black plastic MacBook, and I think its simply because Apple was going for an aluminum lineup. I was surprised that the white plastic MacBook stuck around - I thought they would get rid of "plastic" altogether. But I guess Apple wanted a cheaper MacBook and the aluminum ones weren't it, so they kept the white MacBook to offer a better price point.
The black MacBook represented a premium market when it was still around, being pricier than the white plastic MacBook, and now that there's the unibodies there's no "need" for it anymore! -
Polycarbonate = plastic

IMO this design > Apple -
One color option is cheaper than two. Also, much more white cases were produced so it was more logical to keep making and using those.

Short answer: chop the slow seller, cut production/operation cost. That's everybody do agreessively nowaday.
-
ok thats all pricing strategy anyway. they artificially put a premium on black macbook for reasons not relating to manufacturing costs per se. its like paying extra for black paintjob for ferrari. they can easily continue the black lineup but charged normal prices (or maybe slightly more due to lower economies of scale) to the white macbook
-
well obviously with anodising there is no chipping involved lol
would be cool if they would offer different anodised colored casings for the unibody. -

Ah nowww they tell me!
Well I think the question has been answered. The black macbook wasn't selling as much as the white, so they axed it to make room....
why did they discontinue black macbook
