    Hello.

Does the G73Jh support "Dolby Home Theater" and "Dolby Digital Live"?

    And what about S/PDIF?

    Thanks.

No I don't think it supports Dolby Home Theatre unfortunately.

Also there is no evidence of a red light in the headphone socket so I can only assume that the S/PDIF is coaxial rather than optical. It is listed as an official spec on the ASUSROG site:

Can anyone confirm this, please? :(

    ViciousXUSMC's G73JH review says YES:

    But...

    Thank you.

Good news, but I need confirmation.
    Anybody?

Was curious if it did 7.1 out of the hdmi spot. I got a 12ft hdmi ready and my receiver ready to go.

Yes, take a look at this:

    Integrated HD audio controller
    * Output protected high bit rate 7.1 channel surround sound over HDMI with no additional cables required
    * Supports AC-3, AAC, Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio formats
    http://www.amd.com/us/products/notebook/graphics/ati-mobility-hd-5800/Pages/hd-5870-specs.aspx

Dolby Home Theater needs S/PDIF output.
No S/PDIF, no Dolby Digital Live :(

Xonar U1 or HP-100U could solve the "problem":

But I'd prefer native support

Hey I just want to confirm that there is a S/PDIF connection in the headphone socket. I just plugged a cable in and checked the other end and there was a red light when I went and did a test play in the sound device properties of the Realtek digital output. It does DTS, Dolby Digital and Microsoft WMA Pro Audio at the following rates 44.1khz, 48.0khz, 96.0khz and 192khz.

NICE. Not sure I'll ever use it as I do either headphones or HDMI, but it's a good confirmation for those folks who don't have an HDMI-capable receiver.

Yeah, the headphone port is also a Coax digital port requiring the right plug to work properly.

Wait, is the port coax or optical or both?

I have my G73 setup working as my HTPC right now.

It is completely capable of bitstreaming HD audio formats such as DTS-HD MA and TrueHD via HDMI but can be slightly tricky to setup.

It of course also does the good old standby ac3 and dts formats.

Yep, that's the one. I use one at home for my external DAC.

I bought a G73-rbbx05 from Best Buy a while ago and now I'm looking to buy a home theater to connect to this laptop, but before I buy something I want to be certain that this model has the spdif output as to use the cable indicated in the last post and connect it to an optical input or if I have to buy a home theater with a hdmi input that is more expensive.

What got me wondering is that when I go to realtek Hd audio manager I just have the digital (hdmi) and 2 analog connectors (one green and one pink) displayed and nothing on spdif or optical. This made me think that maybe this model was ripped of this function or that it will only show after I connect this cable.

I hope that someone could clear this up for me as I really don't want to buy something that I won't be able to use.

Take a look at this screen shot...

If you go to Start:Control Panel: Hardware&Sound: Sound

You should see a "Realtek Digital Output" that is your optical out. If you click on properties you will see it only supports Dolby Digital and DTS. This means you cannot use it for games, only DVDs.

If you don't see it, try uninstalling your audio drivers, then run driver sweep (in safe mode), then reinstall Realtek 2.55.

So... why are we using a gaming laptop as a HTPC again?

    Thanks for the quick reply.

Yeah I see it, so its there, I don't know why it didn't occur to me to look there.

What I understand from what you are saying is that if I decide to use this digital output I will only be able to use it for movies with ac3 and dts. Right?

If I use hdmi will I still have this limitations?

    Thanks again for the reply

Edit: It's the only computer I have so I don't have to many options, I'm actually not looking to have a High Def setup, just the basic to have good surround and a good enough sound quality on gaming and eventually in a movie.

If you use HDMI it is my understanding there are no such limitations. HDMI should output all audio regardless.

Seconded. Go with HDMI...works sweet! It can't be that much more expensive these days. :)
