Hi guys, im posting here for the first time under unfortunate cirumstances![]()
So first off here's a little summery of what was going on with my G73.
note: bestbuy model RBBX05
About last month i noticed my g73 started to run pretty hot, and eventually got to idling @ 70-72C , and a run of BC2 got me up to 105C within minutes.., so i got an RMA #, sent it in, they re pasted it(and supposedly there was a fan error also).
Now fast forward to today, got my laptop back a few hours ago, everything seemed ok , temps were better (idle 58-60, haven't had the chance to bench yet).. until i tried updating to 11.3, right at the display driver install a BSOD occurs, and it shuts down.
Things i've tried:
Reinstalled the OS twice.
went from stock asus drivers to > 11.3 = BSOD
uninstalled stock > driver sweeper > 11.3 = installs but CCC doesnt start and my display is stuck at 800x600
uninstalled stock > driver sweeper > 10.12 > no option to install a display driver or CCC (same with 11.1 & 11.2)
Thought it might be 11.3, so i tried installing 10.12 ,(which is what i had previously) and it says that i have the latest CCC & display driver, Or it doesnt even give me the option to install them.
It does this through 10.12 > 11.2, so im unable to install those.
Things that ASUS has done without even stating it
updated my mobo bios from 209 > 211
partitioned my HDD (probably doesn't matter much though, but it's annoying)
when i originally got this laptop it had the GSOD issue, i updated the vbios and all was well, until the raising temps of course.
I called ASUS back and they said to send it back in, with me having to pay for shipping .. -.-
i complained about it and asked to speak with a supervisor, and he has yet to call me back.
anyway has anyone heard of this issue/ have suggestions?, sorry for the long post.. it feels like i've been through hell with this laptop, sick of problems one after another, this was my 2nd replacement .
Thanks in advance![]()

What is the BSOD stop code? You may need to disable automatic restart:
Automatic Restart Windows 7 - How To Disable the Automatic Restart on System Failure in Windows 7 -
Uninstall the CCC software and go into device manager and uninstall the 5800 driver and tick the box to delete the software. Download drive sweeper from Guru3D and clear out any left over ATI files.
Restart.
You should now just have a standard VGA adapter and 11.3 should install fine. Make sure you keep the 11.3 installation file away from drive sweeper or you may need to download it againdrive sweeper likes to get rid of everything.

had the same problem 2 hours ago, because i just had formated the computer, i formated again and reinstalled with drivers on asus website with no problem
-
don't tell me you haven't flashed the vbios?
-
Yeah, sounds like he's done everything EXCEPT try the fixes mentioned on the "All fixes for your g73 here".
They're in the sticky, and explain how to fix it. -
Uninstall all the ATI stuff, and then run ATI Crap Cleaner.
Reboot, and forget about 11.3, use the 03/29 release of 11.4. -
attached the .dmp to this post.
thanks for the reply's so far guys.Attached Files:

You didn't search hard enough...
AMD Catalyst? 11.4 Early Preview -
Also, Asus makes it really clear when you submit it that they can update the bios and reformat the hard drives. -
i wasn't aware that there were drivers in another location besides support & the "Gaming" tab, sorry.. but i do appreciate the help.
uninstalled asus drivers > driver sweeper and tried 11.4, it doesn't give me an option to install ccc or a display driver , just install manager, hydra vision and the sdk runtime.
on a side note ccc from asus reports a vbios of: 012.020.000.032
EDIT:
tried this with 11.3(11.4 wouldn't), and it seemed to install.

Sounds like you did fine with temps. I've got teh same sort of temps, as do many, many others. Check my sig for a thread about "what to expect from a repaste". Run the tests suggested and report on your temps. -
alright, just ran a quick test for now, i was using hwinfo32 to monitor temps before when i said it went up to 93c, but furmark and gpu-z(accidently closed before i realized i didnt take an ss) are reporting different, gpu-z reported 83c on the core if i remember right.
which temps should i be worried about the most?. -
There are 3 temperature sensors. Sounds like you're fine.

And AsusRog Forums, ergo Chastity's great REference Thread is offline! -
There is nothing wrong with 11.3 im using them and get very good frame increases in Homefront and Crysis 2 I think one of the main features in 11.4 is the Dragon Age 2 fixes which I dont see any difference from using 11.3.
On the up side DA2 is one of the worst attempts at an RPG and as Baldurs Gate 2 runs perfectly on the 5870m you need not worry -
also i was just wondering what are some personal preferences on programs for temp monitoring?, i have a habit of wanting to know what mine are every minute of the day lol. -

The package is reported to be an all-in-one for both desktop and mobility. -
Yup, I used it too. Twice, once to make sure that the link was good.
I use AMD GPU Tool to monitor GPU temps, or HWmonitor if I have to know all the temps inside (if my CPU is chugging along and it seems hot). Others use HWinfo32. I like the AMD GPU tool since it can also OC the card, and keeps a record of the highest temp (no graph, though).
I used to want to know teh temps all the time, until I realized that when gaming, it sits at 77/82/77 no matter what game I'm using. Occasionally it'll pop up to 81/85/81, but after several months of the temp never changing ... I gave up on monitoring it. -
-
You need to run HWINFO32 and check the temps on there as you have 4 different sections of the GPU that give out different temps.
The GPU diode temperature is the most common on benchmarks so furmark is giving you that however normally that is also the lowest temp and GPU-z is giving you the MEM(IO) which is normally the hottest however that is too hot for my liking sounds like you need to clean out your vents with compressed air or think about a repaste. -
the thing is i just got it back from asus 2 days ago, and they supposedly repasted it .
-
More likely they did a poor repaste or put to much paste on or the memory pads are not conducting with the heatsink properly and that is why its running hot. Those are not temps worthy of a good repaste. Buuuuut they are in within operating conditions. Anything below 105oC is deemed acceptable although myself I dont like to go above the 95-100oC area.
Bloody Asus -
i hope that is the case.. my temps were like that before i sent it in, only my idle temps were around 72c, now they are 58-62c .. so in the end it didnt really help my load temps much, guess i just have to give it some time
-
If it doesn't send it back in if its under warranty because it could be something simple like the heatsink not being seated properly. Test HWINFO while gaming for 5/10 mins also Furmark pushes the temps to their limits if your in the high 80's low 90's while gaming that is pretty normal for stock paste.
Sorry to say that you would think sending it into Asus would fix it better than yourself but the condition I found mine in when I opened her up and repasted myself to how it is now well you treat what is yours better than another man and my heatsink is making Arctic Silver 5 love to the CPU and GPU right about now -
yeah , i only sent it in because i have 0 experience with laptops, after watching the disassemble vid that kind of overwhelmed me abit lol.
But yeah.. "if you want something done right, do it yourself" , too true.
I might just end up doing it myself down the road after my warranty is up(just a few months more), after i get some games on here ill report back later. -
That pic looks like my temps, more or less. Check my sig for details.
-
alright, sorry it took awhile but here's some updated temps
10mins of BC2 on high settings, got to 93c on TS1
30 mins of furmark got to 106c
also cleaned the vents with an air can, no dust came out that i could see though.
im not sure why its getting that hot even though my idle temps are good, should i send it back in to asus?.
edit: also i noticed that gpu-z reports a gpu core clock of 405MHz (not 700?) -
You do need a repaste from those temps they are too hot and if you have tried to blow any dust or blockages out then it really needs to be done.
I had pretty much the same temps as you prior to a repaste and this is what I found when I did it HERE
Total mess which since I have repasted has fixed all my overheating issues and it runs silent as a headless chicken. If its within warranty its recommended you send it in just in case however you wont need to break any seals to get to the GPU to repaste it so if you decide to do it yourself the added risk is overcome by you doing the repaste properly (the link above shows you Asus's lol attempts at mine) and you can use some serious thermal compound like IC7 to do it.
As with all recommendation you conduct the repaste at your own risk. But i say do it -
11.4 march 23 wont install without a mod even if it was tweeted it would work by Andrew D (CatalystCreator) on Twitter
Check the INFs. youll see -
