Here's the current working configuration that you will need to enjoy a (hopefully) GSOD-Free experience:
1) Your motherboard BIOS will need to be running 0209. 0211 has some broken support, and will cause instability with beta vBIOS.
2) You will need to have a working bootable USB Flash drive. You can click on my 3rd sig link for software to make one.
3) You will need this file obviously![]()
Copy the file to your USB drive, and run the self-extractor. It should copy everything to the same directory. Included are:
ATIFLASH.exe
g730810.sam < current beta vBIOS
g730810-overdrive.rom < my modded beta vBIOS with Overdrive and a 250/500 option
Now, reboot, and hit ESC at the POST screen. You should get a boot menu, and select your USB Flash HDD.
To install the vBIOS, just run update.bat for the beta, or update-od.bat for the modded beta with Overdrive.
I'd appreciate it if we can get some feedback. Also, Wagnard was nice to test the overdrive vBIOS, and it's installing fine. However, if I brick your vid card, I'll be sure to go hide.![]()
UPDATE: Thx to Hellcry for noting how unstable Furmark is with this combo. Ugh! I'm going to hold off on the file until tomorrow, seeing if we can sort this sucker. I mean I was gaming all night without a hitch, but Furmark is being the Devil.
UPDATE: Hairy Donut Test is going fine on 10.7a. All night gaming session on 10.8 was fine. So, use whatever you feel like.

Thanks for the effort. :X
WHO CARES ABOUT FURMARK!
Gief! Ung.
...HellCry, you foiled it for me. -
I saw the thread and got all excited and now its gone!
-
Thanks Chastity for your hard work. Since its beta, I'll see how everyone else thinks of it before I go changing things.
edit - O and screw FURMARK!!!! -
THANKS!!!
:'( we like to play, not run furmarks to see the hairy donut!!! T_T
In the past ATI blocked furmark in its drivers! :_ -
Sorry to dissapoint, but the first thing i did was run furmark and i have to say it GSOD real fast (every time well before even 10 minutes) on all drivers (10.7,10.7a & 10.8) and on both 209 and 211 bios. I just still take furmark for a standard first test since it shows what i want to see the fastest. On my machine if furmark GSODs so do games and if its stable so is the rest. Its rock stable on 10.1 though if that gives you any comfort. Im testing games now will be back with more. I also noticed when i got the vBios is that its the exact same one as the leaked one from the German site (the date is exactly the same but the creation hour on the leaked vBios is 2 minutes later than the one i got from Chastity).
But the powerplay on this one works (it downclocks depending on gpu load)... Its something but probably the last thing we need... -
I dont understand why the vbios has to be "furmark stable"... Ati blocked furmark in a lot of they drivers, and they say in a lot of times that is not recommended to run furmark in desktop gpu even more in a laptop gpu...
Well, I'm going to bed it's late here, bye! -
I already explained the logic. Read my previous post again. And another comment on it here.
-
I am. -
But if it appears to be stable in games why not is vBios available to users?
I don´t think people want to "play furmark"...
Your logic... Would you put your car engine to the maximum RPM for 2 hours at N Gear? -
Then youre also lowering it by plaing SC2 since it can bring your lappy to pretty much the same temps on intense action.
Again i repeat Idiocracy.
There have also been reports by Gary and Chastity that Batman, Metro and Mafia GSOD/RSOD on the newer vBios so i wouldnt call it fully gaming stable either and i dont see this being a newer/fixed vBios than the one from yesterday since its dated 08/09/10. -
When I use my G73 I can tell you I spend 90% of the time staring at the benchmark gleefully.
Games pfft. Work? Yeah right. Video editing? What's that.
G73 is a Furmark machine, didn't you know that? -
It is true!!!, we have to drink our tea while G73 is showing the hairy donut!I do not know if I can stand so much happiness
-
furmark can be a marker of a problem. if issues happen with furmark quickly, then all of us MAY download the beta vbios then all of the sudden a week from now have worse gsods and all be in worse positions. we are all frustrated, i know. i am too. but games may cause gsods like furmark... imagine being in a huge SC2 game ranked etc etc GSOD
i suggest waiting for official releases.
at this point the future of our G73jh using other drivers looks bleak. I only hope that ASUS will man up and offer us some sort of replacement/rma deal
i dont run furmark. amd yeah i just want to play games. but i have to agree with hellcry. It GSODed on furmark in 10mins, ok then we also see GSOD with batman, mafia II, so obviously furmark quickly showed there is a problem. And if we see it now already after "release" of a few hours, think of the problems all of us will find and have!!!
if a new vbios comes out, and furmark runs it 20-30mins fine, then awesome. i am not an advocate of benchmarking our machines into oblivion but i think 3dmark06, furmark, etc have been very very VERY good in our g73 to show what will and will not GSOD quickly. and you dont need to fry your thermal paste, or ruin your laptop to do that, 10-30mins and big problems show themself.
New beta vbios = not good
We keep waiting a few more weeksI just want a replacement, hell give me a crappier G73JW with 460 i dont care if it works
--> we did the facebook revolution, emails, calls, rma... we got gary... our next step is to all send in our G73jh for RMA at the california center on the same day >BOOM here RMA these 1000 units for GSOD
-
Hey the vBios is the same one as posted in the Updates from Asus thread so go download it there and test it for yourself if you please.
Your posts are as always so constructive ziddy. Did you actually give any arguments to discuss? We already know you hate furmark but you cant justify it with a single rational argument that would stick. -
Can we petition the developers of Furmark to rename it "The Hairy Donut Test"? I like that very much.
-
honestly, if my gpu temps reach 90c no matter what the reason (games, furmark, whatever), I would shut it down. I know 90 isn't the danger point but I want mine to last for a very long time. Temps should never reach 100c in the first place. Its just too bad this thing seems to have a thermal paste issue.
and its not idiocy, its being smart not to destroy ones computer. -
i dont want mine to last a long time
if i could and if it was possible to blow it up and create my money back i would
-
Arrrg!!! I imagine eating a hairy donut xDDD -
As long as it doesn't gsod while playing games/videos then I'll be happy. Looking forward to some more testing with the vbios from others. Don't really have anything to test it out with atm.
-
-
I can't wait for Furmark II to come out... it's rumored that the donut is twice as hairy and they got Nathan Fillion to be the voice of the dragon!
-
edit - better safe then sorry. 111c is still too hot in my book. -

-
Thanks lord_neno for the pic and the inevitable nightmares I will suffer through tonight...

Hellcry's info is a little off:
The Batman GSODs and such were from me testing with 211 and the beta vBIOS. Since moving back to 2.09 + beta vBIOS + 10.8, I was gaming pretty much all night without issue.
Also, I have been running Furmarks here too, and yeah, they crash REAL FAST. And I tried all sorts of combos, uninstalling P4GH and Splendid, and then I tried the ye old OC trick, and got 1 good run, and one GSOD.
Then I tried Wagnard's trick @ stock of unplug the AC, wait 10 seconds, and replug in, and that GSOD too.
Judging from the reactions here about Furmark and HadesI decided to put the file back up for downloading. Please use at your own risk, there be Dragons here! (see OP for link)

-
At times like these i wished there was a -rep option
mainly because of that disturbing photo
-
I repeat: "Would you put your car engine to the maximum RPM for 2 hours at N Gear?"
-
-
The link seems to be broken...
-
-
Chastity, if I test your modded vbios what do I do If its not working out?
can I just flash 209 back on and it will go back to the stock vbios? -
When i play a match with 500 units on screen it heats up just that much. Playing campaign it never reaches such temperatures. But fine i dont know what im talking about. Go nuts with your new toy. Im going to sleep its to late to argue about this.
-
Thanks Chas! I'll name my first kid after you, even if it's a boy!
Then I'll name my second kid after Gary, even if it's a girl! -
hellcry gets alot of crap here. but the truth is there laptops should run furmark fine. we have all just become so sad depressed waiting for no GSODs that we are willing to accept any vbios that lets us play with 10.8 and be able to game for a night
thats fine but hellcry's point is also fine. and if he bought the laptop to benchmark, then the ASUS flagship R.O.G. G73 for 2000$ should be able to do that for him!!! so i think he a right to push it with furmark, etc and be upset that it craps out all the time
i will be happy if my games work with the newest drivers, but i am no enthusiast. i just do drasing on cs5 and play sc2 sometimes, but if i was someone who benchmarked etc i would more pissed than hellcry probably -

If you cannot figure out how to download it from that link, then you are better off waiting for an official fix... -

Tomorrow i will post vBios beta results!!.
Bye!!!

-
But I'm hoping as much as the next guy that this is it (or at least a solid step to a perfect vBIOS)!

Just updated my bios of the brand new g73jh that I got today. Havent even played a game on it yet, but I'm gsod proofing it.
