    Absolutely true. If you wish to play the game widescreen, you should either find a configuration file to edit or live with the "fullscreen" 4:3 style. Otherwise, you will be viewing a skewed image.

    4:3 is a ratio. 4 horizontal pixels for every 3 vertical pixels on a screen.
    (4/3 = 1.3333)
    16:9 is a ratio. 16 horizontal pixels for every 9 vertical pixels on a screen.
    (16/9 1.7778)

    4/3 * 3/3 = 12/9

    If you take a 4:3 image and stretch it to fill the screen, you are using the same amount of vertical pixels (the 9 part) and every 12 horizontal pixels from the original picture are being digitally stretched to fill the physical space of 16. Going from 12 to 16 is a 33% stretch of the original image. Your picture will appear "short and fat." Well, short and fat unless the item on the screen is laying sideways, in which case it would be a third longer than it is supposed to be...

    Cropping, however would be more okay to do. You'd probably lose some of your HUD, and definitely would lose at some of the original picture, but you'd be filling the screen. Still a goofy way to go... But at least the picture is still correct.

    If a game can't handle widescreen output, whether by settings configuration, file editing, or mod/update downloading- you should just play it in fullscreen format or invent a new way to make it output a widescreen picture rather than stretching its native 4:3 image +33%.

    I should say, I have known some people, even some very highly learned and technical people, who prefer to stretch the image regardless of the hideous disfigurement of the picture. (Football guys look more like wide Gears of War guys when you do this stretching) For whatever reason, it does not seem to be a universal thing that people notice. I guess it comes down to what you think is more ugly: A hideously disfigured display of an incompatible format, or a couple black bars! Please people.... Stay true to yourselves, stay true to the classics I implore you! Resist the ridiculous urge to stretch to fill your screens! :D

    With the above being said by xfinrodx. I'll explain what exactly is meant by "modifying game config" as opposed to setting auto-scaling to off. Some games have configuration files of .ini .cfg .txt which can be edited using Notepad (or any text editor), unless they're encrypted. Most of the time there will be a option that states something like "resolution = 1920x1080". If it is a soft-coded resolution like the one above, you can probably edit that to whatever resolution your screen is and it will render the game graphics accordinly (no stretching), with the exception of certain images such as maybe the background image used at the login screen. (most other images such as the item image will be the same resolution as before because the item box is rendered correctly still). This can be done with most single player games, some multiplayer (but not all). Since this is mostly for old games, it is relatively simple to find what you need to edit.
