Hi i just got a used Asus G60vx from ebay with the following specs.

    Intel Core 2 Duo P9500 @ 2.53 GHz w/ 6 MB L2 cache (dual-core)
Nvidia GTX 260M w/ 1 GB GDDR3 VRAM and 112 shader units (9800GT desktop equivalent)
    4 GB DDR2 800 RAM
    320 GB 7200 RPM HDD

after receiving it and and reinstalling the os. I did some gaming
Stalker SOC all settings on high 1900x1080(connected to external hdtv via hdmi)

And using hw monitor, in a 2hr gaming the gpu reached a 101c peak!
I have the laptop on a rising cooler that have 2 fans.
TBH i'm worried the laptop will fail.(i paid 700us)

Is this laptop's gpu that hot? my former laptop's gpu 8800mgts max temp was 65.

in your opinion should i return the laptop? it doesn't have any type of warranty

The Asus G50/G51/G60 series all get very hot. Typical temperatures of the GPU GTX260m in these machines range from 85°C to 102°C. However, it should probably run around the 90s range depending on your ambient temperature.

I suggest you clean it thoroughly with a can of compressed air, and if possible/or you know how, perhaps do a repaste job to at least get 5-10C off.

I my G51J for example always had temps between 92°C - 97°C. My previous G51VX always gamed at 102°C. etc.

It's a rather high temp, but the machine seems to take it and some friends of mine still have their old G51 still working despite such temps, without any particular issues.

I can attest to the wonders of cleaning, my 9800m GS dropped 25C after I cleaned out my vents yesterday. 101 seems warm, I'd try spraying it out with air.

The 260m runs quite hot compared to the 9800m.

Here's a small rant about my experiences, which basically show if you're creative you can make a cooler machine:
As a stock machine my temps barely ever hit 90C when I first got this laptop, but when I began overclocking past Asus's provisions I had to exert additional effort into cooling.
I made a custom USB-powered cooler and that helped keep temps under 95C with OCing. I drilled a few holes over the GPU and a few smaller holes over the fan itself and temps dropped another 5-8C. I repasted but that didn't appear to do anything more than 1-3C (OCZ Freeze).
Now after cleaning and adding a 35W CPU, it's rare I get past 95C even with a 20% FSB OC.

My GTX260M was running rather warm (58~62C @idling, 88~94@load), so I searched the forum and came up with so many threads. :p

    Anyway, I was using a stock 186.40 and tried the 186.82 first. It downclocked to 200/400/120 and 383/767/301 w/Asus 23" 1980 x 1080 monitor. And then tried 197.45 (delete "nv-disp.inf" before installation).

Both 186.82 & 197.45 are great drivers, but I started having audio pops and clicks occasionally. So, I decided to go back to 186.40.

Even @ idling, the temp slowly goes up to 88C and the fan kicks in.

Anyway, I'm a casual gamer. So, I haven't tried many games yet. I have only played CoD World at War, Mirror's Edge, NFS Shift, Fallout 3 and Bioshock.

The temp usually gets 88~89C but Fallout 3. When I play Fallout 3 with using an Asus 1980 x 1080 monitor, I got 94C. Without using that monitor, I got 89C.

My temp won't get as hot as yours though. I think that's because I put my laptop on the monitor (laptop) stand (There are many hols on the top part.) as you can see in the pic below. Well, I might repaste the GPU at some point.

Do some mods. Drill holes in chassis and repaste.

TBH i like the laptop, i had a gateway p6831fx, that i sold for 600us (i live in Tijuana Mexico) and this one cost me 700us. it does feel like a great 100us upgrade.

I'm not afraid of re-pasting i have done that before, i'm even considering ordering copper blocks(saw some mod in this site) and i even have a grill that i could use if i remove that fake grill.
The problem is that if i do that i will loose my paypal buyer protection.
But i have to say the owner of this laptop DID take good care of it, it's in excellent shape.

My only concern was how high is the failure rate of this model.

    Thanks for your advices,
if someone can point me to a direct link in EBAY that sells copper blocks to use on this laptop(i cant find them)
And also whats the measure of the thermal pad that this laptop uses on the north bridge?(in case i damage it ,when i repaste the gpu-cpu)

I repasted the GPU w/Arctic Silver 5 this afternoon. I forgot to measure the thermal pad on the north bridge, but I don't think you have to worry about braking it because it's made of very tough material.

However, you need to be careful about thermal pads for memories on the GPU. They are really really soft and accidentally I ripped one of them. Fortunately, it was oversized (half of it was enough for that particular memory), so I was able to reuse it again. Phew!

I haven't played any games yet, but the idle temp is about 56C (500/1250/799) with using an external 1920 x 1080 monitor and not much improvement, but at least it won't reach 88C anymore. So far, the max temp is 77C.
