Proud new owner of a G53SW here. Plugged my Dell U2711 into it via HDMI and I realized I can't get the max resolution of 2560x1440 on my external monitor.
Anyway have a similar setup or have a similar issue?

Have you tried to set the resolution in the custom resolution section in the Nvidia Control panel?
The card can handle 2560x1440. The max digital resolution is 2560x1600, Although the max VGA is 2048x1536. -
That resolution doesn't even show up on my control panel.

Does it matter that my driver is 267.21? I tried upgrading to the beta 285.* but when I try the nVidia install says "could not find compatible graphics hardware" during the "Checking System Compatibility" phase. -
Actually N/M...
http://support.dell.com/support/edo...ug/operate.htm#Setting the Optimal Resolution
The manual states it supports HDMI at 1080p which is exactly what you are seeing, so it is working as intended.
You need to use DVI or Display port to hit max resolution. -
Yup, running this cable.

Trying to upgrade the driver now using some pain in the a$$ method:

Digital output ^^ not HDMI output. HD is 1080p as the other fella mentioned. -
Ohhh, pretty. It works.
Do you know why it wouldn't show up nativley? Kinda weird me out I need to create a custom resolution.
Alright, just gotta deal with this annoying updating driver problem now! Thanks! 1 down, 1 to go! -

Just doing a follow up on my own thread.
I hacked the 280.* drivers so I could install on my G53. It installed sucessfully but borked my HDMI OUT port... so I reverted back to the default ASUS driver.
Just a heads up for anyone who may try it someday. -
Updaing this thread once again.
Turns out it's not a driver problem. When you use a custom resolution it just messes up the laptop settings -- after I set a custom resolution I cannot boot the computer into the resolution and I can no longer attach my HDMI montior because when I attach it nVidia tries to load the custom reion and locks up.
Anyone know how to remove custom resolutions without having the device connected (as everytime I cnonect my HDMI monitor it locks the driver and I cannot remove my custom setting)? Also, nobody else here is trying to connect a 27" monitor to their G53s? -

Hmm. Which port would I put it in? The G53 only has a VGA and a HDMI port.

Here is someone who got it to partially work on DVI by editing the driver: XPS M1530 and 2560x1440 on U2711 with HDMI [SOLVED AND WORKING] - Laptop Video Forum - Laptop - Dell Community

The G53SW has a HDMI 1.4 port... if you match it with a 1.4 cable, you should be able to support it, assuming the Dell HDMI port doesn't crap on you... and if it does, use a HDMI-DVI adapter cable and connect to the monitor on it's DVI port.

Here is someone that basically has the same exact issue: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1479962
It is a long post, but it seems to indicate that a cable/adapter will not work and no one seems to sell a 'active' hdmi to dual-link dvi adapter that supports the 2560x1440 resolution.
Towards the bottom of the post it indicated that the workaround is to create a custom resolution like you did before using a refresh rate of 35Hz not 60Hz. -
In response to my own problem I couldn't figure out how to remove custom resolutions so I just re-installed the driver again.
@iutbf Wow thanks for that link. It's spot on the problem I am having. Will give that thread a good read and try the solution listed there. -
Let us know if it works, as I was actually considering a 27"+ myself
-
I switched it to 35hz. It "works" but due to the low frequency there is noticable choppiness in the monitor. I'd stay away from the 27" for now IMO. Wish I had a 24" now

I bought the Asus G53SW and the Dell U2711 a few months ago, the main reason was to get 2560x1440 relatively cheap with a decent, quiet laptop. After some tweaking it works relatively well. There are some pitfalls that can be tricky to figure out so I wrote this little summary in case someone else might need it or if I should forget the whole thing myself at some point.
The initial 2560x1440 setup:
1: Connect the laptop to the monitor via HDMI.
2: Right click on the desktop and select 'NVIDIA Control Panel'
3: Select the Dell 2711 and click 'Customize' below the resolution list.
4: Create a Custom Resolution of 2560x1440, Test it > Ok.
5: You can use the Laptop Display in addition to the Dell if you like.
To do this, once again right click on the desktop and select 'Screen Resolution' this time.
6: In the 'Change the appearance of your displays', click the monitors and see the 'Display' drop down below the monitors change.
Once it says '1. Mobile PC Display' you can enable/disable this through the 'Multiple Displays' dropdown, i.e. 'Extend desktop to this display'
That should be all you need to do to get a glorious 2560x1440+1920x1080 dual monitor setup.
However, keeping this working is a bit tricky, if you try to reboot or changes users or if the computer sleeps or hibernates it will mess things up, both your laptop display and the dell will go black until you unplug the HDMI cable.
Once unplugged, you should get the normal 1920x resolution on the laptop display. However, attempting to connect the HDMI will make both screens go black again. Attempting to 'Scan Sources' via the monitors menu system will not display the HDMI.
I disabled sleeping/hibernation and most of the problem was resolved, only the occasional reboot is causing me trouble now, if I forget to change back to 1920x first.
For a while it seemed the only solution for this was to uninstall/roll back the graphics drivers, reboot (several times) and run the e-Driver software that came with the computer in order to reinstall the graphics drivers. This typically took anywhere from 20-30 minutes.
Quite recently I found a faster way to make the U2711 work with the HDMI connection, once again allowing for 2560x1440:
1: Disconnect the HDMI.
2: Connect the VGA.
3: Right click on the desktop and select 'Screen Resolution'.
4: Go to Advanced Settings > Monitor > tick the 'Hide modes that this monitor cannot display' checkbox. This step is what allows HDMI to be 'detected' again.
5: Connect the HDMI.
5: Touch the menu button on your U2711 (above the power button) > Input Source > Scan Sources. HDMI is now detected and can be selected.
6: Go back to the 'Monitor' tab in step 4 and deselect hide modes. Apply.
7: Go to 'Screen Resolution' in step 3 and see that you have three displays: Dell U2711 via HDMI&Analog and the Laptop Display.
The U2711 Analog display should be disabled once you've selected HDMI in Step 5. The Laptop Display will probably also be disabled now. See Step 5 from the initial setup on how to enable this again. Once this has been done, it should restore the Dell resolution to 2560x1440, otherwise you can go to Advanced Settings > List All Modes and select your custom resolution from the bottom of the list. -
I was trying to buy one for my G74 ... but the resolution was not as exotic as yours , just 1920*1080 ...
2560x1440 output on G53SW?
