    Hey guys,

I am looking for a 2nd HD caddy for my Asus G55VW laptop. Can anyone recommend an online vendor in the U.S. (preferably in California).

    TIA,

    grecinos

Are you looking to replace the optical drive with a HDD? Any standard 12.7mm optical caddy should be able to do that, get a version with swappable front so it can sit flush.

Yes. I'm looking to replace the optical drive with a HDD. Thanks for the advice as per the swappable front. I'm trying to find a vendor in the U.S. Most of the caddies that are for sale on eBay are from China. I'm willing to pay an extra $5.00 or so as the foreign vendors will take 7 to 10 days to deliver, sometimes more.

Someone will be selling it locally on there I am sure.

You could check another site like Amazon, I see many on there from US vendors.

I found one on Newegg.com. It was a universal 12.7mm caddy. It cost around $11 and it worked like a charm! Thanks guys! :D

Just a follow up on my experience with the universal caddy. After installing the caddy, I noticed that when I shut down the PC, the power button and keyboard backlight remained lit. I was able to isolate the problem to the caddy. Fortunately I found a solution. There is a small switch next to the connector inside the caddy. Moving the switch to the opposite position solved the problem. My laptop now shuts down completely. If someone is having the same problem, I hope this helps :).

    Cheers!

The caddy itself has a switch? Can you link to which one you got?

Sure. I bought this one on Newegg (item# 9SIA1ZZ1RY4176):
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA1ZZ1RY4176&nm_mc=TEMC-RMA-Approvel&cm_mmc=TEMC-RMA-Approvel-_-Content-_-text-_-

Click on the ellipsis to bring up the photo gallery for this item. On the fourth photo, you can see the switch next to the SATA connector on the left. That is the toggle switch I was referring to.

    Hope this helps :)

I'm trying to think what it switches, default SATA generation reporting? Power saving mode? Very odd but at least it's working for you :)

Good question, I've no clue what it does. You can probably ask the vendor that sells the item. There's a link where it says "Sold and Shipped by: Victake". I was prepared to return it and buy another one off of ebay. I'm glad I asked them for advice.

With some reading it ensures the diagnostic pin on the connector does not make contact with the interface to the machine which can cause the issues you have. Interesting.
