I've browsed a few of the 101 pages on the G73J benchmark thread- everyone is OC'd and pushing high numbers. I am completely stock, but I think these are abnormally low, right???

    3dmark vantage scores:
    GPU: 6585
    CPU: 5823

Your cpu is under 1ghz?! do you have a throttling problem or does it do it dynamically? i think you may have power saver on or something, thats not normal it should idle at 1.6ghz

Thank you!! That was it. I had it on "High Performance", when I switched it to "Power4Gear High Performance" the cpu kicked up. W.TF? I had no idea.

Core speed now ranges between 1800 and 2600. I guess I would expect 1600 there on the 720QM, but I'll run some tests this way and see how I look.

It's downclocking when idle, all CPUs do this to save power and it's normal (It's called Intel SpeedStep). If it's still running at <1600MHz when at load then there is a problem.
