Hi all, I have a 5.1 speaker setup and when I connect my G73 to the receiver via HDMI, on the 5.1 test only the Center and Surround speakers work. I get no sound from anything other than the test. My drivers are all up to date. Any help?

Check the receiver to make sure you are getting a 5.1 signal. Also make sure your are using the right 5.1 settings. (There may be 2 5.1 options under Win Audio Config)

Well, after fiddling with it for a while, I got 5.1 surround audio from the HDMI port... until the next restart. Now the playback devices menu always says "Not plugged in" for the Realtek HDMI Output option, and I can't select or change anything on it. Using optical from the audio out gives 3.1 surround (front + center + sub), and I have tried reinstalling the realtek and ati hdmi drivers with no change. Any ideas?

weird... I use HDMI almost on a daily basis since I use my JH for video playback on the big TV. Have you tried a different cable?

Wasn't there a problem with the AMD drivers causing the HDMI device connected to not recognize the laptop after reboot?

Alright, I have been reading into and I now, finally, have functioning audio from the HDMI out. But, I now can't get the video to work. My laptop brings up the notifier of "Now outputting HDMI audio and video" or somesuch (the one that is the same style as the turbo boost) and detects 2 displays on the video settings, but my external monitor (connected to my receiver's HDMI out) does not ever display anything...

Okay, this is getting a bit ridiculous, but I think I have fixed the HDMI audio, and I now have video (fixed by unplugging and replugging the HDMI out on the receiver... why did that do anything), but it is very grainy and doesn't take up the entire screen (~ 3/4 inch margin). Thanks again

If it's an ATI card, enable overscan. If it's nvidia, there's a similar somewhere.

You're not having hardware problems, it's a configuration issue. Think of it as learning to set a VCR, even if you know how to do it, it still changes when you get a new model.

Same deal for HDMI setup - you've got a bunch of hardware that is highly unlikely to be setup in the exact same way anywhere else, so no one can walk you through it. You've got to become familiar with your TV and your computer in order to get them to play nice. If you want a plug and play solution, you'll have a long wait on your hands - there hasn't been a good plug and play solution since ... well, capitalism. Everyone wants you to be locked into their system.

The reason your receiver needed to be unplugged and replugged, is because it didn't detect the video feed. Seems like your receiver is a little outdated :p
So, that's a hardware problem that no one here could have replicated, because no one knows what sort of receiver you have. Kinda like having the volume off on your receiver. No matter what you do, it isn't the computers fault.

Hey guys! reading this topic I thought maybe any of you couyld help me!

I also have a 5.1 speaker setup and in order to make it compatible with my Asus G73jh I was considering one of these options:

    1) buy an externeal 5.1 sound card (like Creative X-Fi 5.1 USB)
    2) buy a receiver with with HDMI input

What would you guys do? which receivers are out ther and how much would they cost me? (I have no idea about receivers LOL )

    thanks for your help :)

you need to apply over scan, I had to do the same thing with my big screen, about the grainy-ness, thats your amp, the signal could be recieving harmful interference, or the graphics chip in the amp is only sub par at passing the image on to your tv. The lock out seems like a DRM problem. HDMI cables are incredibly fussy, I know tons of people who have to unplug and replug once in a while because either your amp or your tv is going, :uh oh, this isn't an official cable, someone can be stealing the content passed through this cable!" and shutting it down, unplugging fixes this.

To the Serlex, if you wanna go cheap, get the usb card and make sure it can do DOLBY DIGITAL LIVE or DTS LIVE over OPTICAL AUDIO, other wise you will not get 5.1 channels of surround sound. Easiest way to go though is just use an HDMI amp, price can go from 100 to 3000+. Look on used websites for your city for deals, you most likely will be able to keep your existing speakers and cabling and plug that into a new amp.

I'll keep in mind the unplugging and replugging thing, thanks.
    @Mark I have the JH
Enabling overscan makes the picture slightly larger but also a bit grainier (I guess to be expected if the picture gets better and everything else stays the same?)
I will keep messing with the settings on my monitor to see if that can help any, but going through the full range on Sharpness and Saturation in the settings yielded no visible effect... but looking at the picture and reading lots of other descriptions on various forums makes me believe that this particular problem lies in the monitor.

It would help to know what 5.1 speaker system are you talking about?
