Yes, I know, according to other threads I've read on here, it seems the 5870 and the 480 are really close to each other. But I can't help but wonder since in other sites, I'm seeing people post stuff like 480 is 15% faster, bla bla bla, etc.
What kind of reviews have been made? or comparison?
-
If it is based on the 460 core then it should give us 5870m guys a run for our money, but it will still use a tad more power and create a bit more heat I believe.
-
its about 7% faster in benchmarks but in games maybe 10%..in NVIDIA games of course its 20% faster.
-
I guess we're going to have to wait for benchmark tests, but I don't think the 460 is going to be anything close to either the 480 or the 5870. Obviously speculation is a little premature at this point, but there ya have it.

GTX 460m BENCHMARKS!!!
http://forum.notebookreview.com/gam...9-nvidia-gtx-460m-benchmarks.html#post6664998 -
As far as I read, the 480M outperforms the 5870M, but it seems that total graphics power (GPU + RAM) of the GTX 480M is about 100W and it generates a lot of heat.

Maybe ASUS will cook some model with liquid cooling.
-
Indeed, a brand that didn't even bother to put a decent TIM on their flagship gaming product are likely to go all out and integrate the top of the line liquid cooling solution for their laptops........its either that or a Bios update that will make your fans spin faster :|

I would like to add something about the G73JH vs G73JW benchmarks posted:
I was thinking about this, and I remembered the JW got a CPU refresh, so is running slightly faster than the JH. This could affect the benchies when they are very close. -
Wait a minute..
Why are we comparing the GTX480M to the 5870M? (Technically a Underclocked GTX465 VS a 5770 with 5750 clocks)
The GTX 480M is a bit faster than the 5870 (At the cost of heat and power usage) especially in heavy DX11 titles. (A driver upgrade could close the gap a bit though)
On the other hand if we are looking at comparing the G73JH to the JW, the JW Comes with a GTX460M which is slower than the 5870M except in heavy DX11 titles (like Dirt 2). Again I believe a driver update could close this gap.
The benefit of Physx and 3D support would be nice though, so I guess it is up to personal preference. -
I looked at notebookcheck and I'm seeing a fps difference of 48 and 58 for crisis. Is that even accurate? I kinda find it hard to believe.
-
really i wouldn't trust notebookcheck.com benchmarks... especially when they're new .. wait for an article on it just like there was for GTX480M to see how accurate it is..

King of Interns Simply a laptop enthusiast
100W for a laptop GPU!! That is ridiculous lol. Technology should move forward of course and as a result we all expect faster GPU's and CPU's however shouldn't the latest product be at least as efficient or more efficient than its predecessor? If not what is the point of shrinking processes etc
-
It's actually even worse than that, King of Interns. Because the truth is that, from everything I am reading, these laptop cards are NOT even the equivalent of the desktop cards with the same number! Please someone correct me on this because this is one of those things I HOPE I am wrong about, but if I remember correctly, the 5870m is NOT the same card as the regular 5870. I think it's more like a 47xx card or something maybe higher than that, and the GeForce GPU's are the same thing, I believe more like equivalent to the 9800?
-
No laptop GPU is the equal of its desktop brethren. It's just impossible.
The MR5870 is about midway between a HD5750-5770. I don't know the equal of the the new Nvidia 400s, but Notebookcheck says the 480M is equal to the 5770.
