No reason it shouldn't work, but very little gain in performance over the 7970m. The 9xxx series scheduled for October will be more interesting!

I'm hoping when the 8970m is available as a component sale on eBay the price of the 7970m will drop so I can justify getting one for my g73jh. Unless it goes below $300US I would be better selling and buying a new laptop.

When you say 9xxx series are you talking about mobile GPU or Desktop GPU?

I don't know the specs on the 8970m, what makes you say there wont be much of a difference?
Probably talking about the 9xxxm but I see no reason why they would release a 9xxxm so soon. Is a 8070m just a rebadge or what?

My mistake, thought I was looking at ETA of the 9xxxm, not the desktop one. Guess it will be at least mid next year before the 9xxxm is out. 8970m from what I have been reading looks pretty much just a clocked up 7970m. I was hoping the 8xxx series might have lower power consumption, then I might be able to get one without having to do a PSU mod (as have the 920xm I reckon the stock PSU wouldn't run a 7970m/8970m).

Ah well, the old 5870m still plays games fine for me, will keep it at least a year unless it blows up!

Have you thought about slapping a 7970m on it? It;s a great investment in my honest opinion. Equivalent laptop with that card will run you close to 2 gran. At the time I did the mod, which was about a year ago, only cost me 650 for the upgrade giving my laptop more life. If the motherboard was to fail, I would still fix it. I love this laptop. I put a lot of care and upgrades into it xD

I will probably wait till I move to USA early next year, though could look at doing sooner and shipping the parts over here. What brand of card did you end up getting? As yours has lasted well with the individual copper heatsinks on chips method might be a good idea to get the same type. And did you do the PSU mod, or are you using the original? It is annoying how you can't buy a 240w PSU with the correct connectors to plug into g73H.

Annoying yes, but if you modify the dell adapter it is very slim.

Bought a clevo from a user here, just had to blind flash it. For me using individual heatsink for each chip made sense. Not all chips are even in height so I made it a point for each chip had a heatsink, even the ones that did not need it. Heat will travel to the coolest area so yeah lol.

Annoying part for me is having to cut the small heatsinks! Ac adapter wasnt that big of a deal as meaker said.

The way I modded my card was completely unconventional lol I got creative. Couldn't of done it without the awesome people here in this forum!

It's a rebadge w different firmware and some extra memory from what I've come across. I'm curious to see if anyone can successfully flash the vbios. I've read in Alienware/Clevo forums of users trying to use versions of the 7970 and bricking the card. Any versions of the vbios out there that are compatible with the G73JH/8970?

I would think they would be able to be used interchangeably but from what I've read 7970 owners have used 8970 vbios versions but when done the other way around have bricked.

The extra memory of the 8970 seems like a plus if going through the trouble to do the mods... If it can be flashed properly.

Extra memory does not mean anything, they can't use older firmware.

I was tired of the debate and went ahead and bought one. Once I find a version of the 8970m vbios compatible with the HM55 I will give it a shot.

Certainly can't be the only one who wants to try this and it shouldn't be that difficult.

You enter the commands as you would normally with a black screen, you can do a practise run with your old card and write down the steps.

    @yoshey791

Whenever I can get my hands on an 8970m vbios that's compatible with our HM55 chipset. The Clevo I have now needs to be modified from the PM77 chipset. Just don't know if there's one out there yet.

Thanks Yoshey! That's the closest I've come to finding a working vbios. I haven't tried this one but Prena the uploader of that vbios later says on the thread:

"Even the newer 7970 have problems in HM series. They are essentially 8970, the original 7970 boards are no longer made, yet they are the only ones working in HM, no matter what vBIOS is used the newer batch has issues."

When asked if there was any support at all for the 8970m for the HM series boards the reply was that even the newer 7970m cards produced will no longer work with HM series laptops due to the amd boards design being changed.

Sounds like I (or anyone with a newer 7970m) might be SOL if that is true for the asus :(

The HM series Clevos use a HM65 chipset not sure if it is the chipset or something else on those causing the problem but the vbios posted do have HM series chipsets in those laptops (HM67 and HM87) so could be worth a try! I'll try talking your suggestion and asking around who knows may be closer than I think.

Yes this sounds pcb related and possible deep firmware that's not flashed by the bios flasher.

Yes, a 28nm maxwell equivalent with a larger core and wider mem bus as a gap filler.

I have the updated stock 213 bios which I don't think will really make a difference when flashing the video bios but I will definitely consider flashing the with this one as it only further improves the system bios. Thanks for the tip Yoshey!!

Until it's in the hands of users we don't know what work cards will need.
