I have an Asus G50VT-X1 that the GPU recently went haywire.
Can I replace it with a 9800M GT?
Or what else can you guys recommend?
Also, will the heatsink match up and will there be any heat issues?

    Thanks

There is no asus 9800m gt to upgrade to, you can buy another 9800gs or a gtx 260m, just use the guide that son this forum to upgrade to a gtx 260m

You cant stick a common 9800m GT in there, your highest upgrade would be an Asus gtx260m.
The cards are different from the ones retailed with alienwares and clevos, they are mostly proprietary.

    Thx Guys...
Ok...so the 9800M GT will not fit.
Will the GTX260M cause me any heat issues? This card runs hotter correct?
Also, is this a direct replacement? Heatsink, fitting etc?

Have you taken apart your laptop yet?
Look at the cards they should i will update in a sec when i look at the mxm types to confirm\
Update: Okay i can CONFIRM that they are all MXM 2.1 Type III cards that i listed and SHOULD fit.
No promises of course, but i HIGHLY recommend you take apart your laptop and look at the cards ot make sure the heat sink will fit. Also you need to buy some thermal compound for that gpu, IC diamond is the way to go ;)

So basically if the card fits and the heat sink matches up....it shouldn't be a problem?

Correct, due to the slots matching the only thing you must check is the heatsink

Oh boy, so much potential for bad information in this thread. Let me lay out some points.

    1. 9800m GS != 9800m GT. A 9800m GS is an underclocked 9800m GTS. Sometimes it is recognized incorrectly as a 9800m GT, but it lacks the extra shaders of the 9800m GT.

    2. You CANNOT GET ANY MXM CARD!! You can only get an Asus branded one since the G50vt/G50v/G51 all use a reverse MXM slot. This means if you might be able to fit a regular MXM card in there but you'll fry it, since electrically the pinouts are in reverse.

    3. YOU CANNOT GET A G71/G72 CARD!! IT WILL NOT FIT. Timinator has tried this and was our guinea pig.

    4. If you put a 260m in your G50vt you lose all fan control and HDMI audio out. There is no workaround and manually modding my own drivers has been unsuccessful.

Please consider the above before sinking your money into a new GPU.

@joshanator, I don't mean any offense, but please read up on this stuff before giving advice worth a few hundred dollars. I understand you're trying to help, but one card you linked was mislabeled as a 9800m GT, and the other is a G71 card that won't fit in the OP's G50. Nothing personal and no hard feelings though. :)

Wow....my head is spinning. Thx for the clarification dtdood.

One last question, the 9800M GT listed in the ebay link above, is that actually a 9800M GS? Sure looks like it to me as it matches up, down to the numbers on the card with mine.

@dtd00d Good Call i was honestly hoping he would not get the 260m due to this, i just put it there as a option(a bad one yes)

    It's not a bad option, it's a non-option.

The 260m is actually his only option for a GPU upgrade, unless he gets an Asus-branded 9 600m. Installing one is difficult in terms of drivers, but aside from a lack of HDMI out and 100% fan speed all the time, it works.

The 9800m GT you see on eBay is a mislabeled 9800m GS. Some older GPU programs detect the GS as a GT incorrectly, which is probably what happened with this seller. There is no compatible 9800m GT that fits in a G50vt, nor any Asus laptop for that matter as far as I know.
