hello again guys , i decided to return my laptop (G72GX-RBBX05) and buy the ASUS G Series G60JX-RBBX05 ,

but i heard that there is a problem with it , that it reads only 3.85 of usable ram , EVEN IF YOU UPGRADE IT TO 8 GB ,

so is that true ? can anyone confirm it , and why it read only 3.85 of ram ?

and did i make the right decision by buying this laptop (ASUS G Series G60JX-RBBX05 ) ?

thanks for your help in advance !

if you get windows 7 64 bit , you'll read not only 8GB but 32GB!! You need a 64 bit operating system to read more than 4GB RAM.. just go and get windows 7 64 bit from any of the free links on the forum and install it using the same key that came on the bottom of your laptop... problem solved :D

I do not have the right answer but here are a few things it might be.

to use over 3GB of RAM you need a 64Bit OS. Does it have that?
Also some Bios will affect RAM as well, you may need to see if there is afix that way.

If no one answers you with a known reason or fix, go to a new lap top.

Hello everyone. I've just encoutered same problem. I have bestbuy model with 6GB of RAM and decided to upgrade it to 8GB. I've got Hynix RAM 2GB DDR3 PC 10600 module, installed it in free slot... and now windows shows only 4GB of RAM! 0_o But what is strange, that CPU-Z shows that laptop has 8GB of RAM and properties of all modules. OS is Windows 7 Professional x64, and it showed 6GB of ram correctly before. Can you help me?

Oh, sorry - just switched places of old and new modules - and now it works. Now I have 8Gb. :)

Well apparently you need an i7 CPU to use more than 4gb of ram? Obviously 64-bit O/S but I was told the i7 CPU was required.

Hm no that's not true, you don't need an i7 just to read 4GB+. Unless it's some kind of BIOS/chipset/motherboard limitation on the particular machine, which would be extremely unusual. I haven't read that the G60Jx can't use more than 4GB, it's the same board as the G51Jx, which has no problems with more memory.

I didn't mean a computer without an i7 can't use more than 4gb of ram.. I was talking about the G60jx in general. Sorry if I am incorrect..

    From the official ASUS site,

    DDR3 1066/1333 MHz up to 8GB (Intel® Core™ i7 platform)
    DDR3 1066 MHz up to 4GB (Intel® Core™ i5 platform)

I'm receiving one of these in a couple days from Newegg, wanted the x64 architecture specifically for going beyond the 32-bit memory cap. I'll post my results when I wipe and rebuild the OS with a Win 7 pro x64 disc.

Review and reseller sites can't make up their mind: some say it's a 4gb cap, while others still claim up to 8gb.

(as a followup, here is a response from Asus to an actual customer inquiry on the issue.)

I think your asking the wrong questions here. You ask "what gaming laptop has only 4 gigs of ram"

The answer in your case is: Games that are going to use more then 4gb of ram aren't going to be able to be processed by the mid range GPU in that laptop :)

@apachehavok , whats wrong with the nvidia gts360m :( , i thought this gpu is high end , that can play anygame i want , especially if i upgrade my cpu to core i7 and the memory to 8gb .

what are the specs of your laptop? but i'm not sure about it but it has nvidia gts 360m if so why upgrading the cpu.its not worth it i thin, has a lower video card than the gtx 260m, gts 360m came with 96 pipilines unified and gtx 260m came with 112 pipilines unified. i guess just add to it the highest core i5 :D

I think you'll be OK with 8 gigs, as long as the modules are compatible, everywhere I search says max 8GB for the G60JX-RBBX05. It would be a very strange limitation if it could only take 4GB.

I mean that if you only plan on playing GAMES then 4gb will be more than enough. Only reason you would need more ram is if you plan on using applications that can use it.

More ram most likely won't even give you 1 more fps in games. Most games are still 32-bit so they wont use that much ram. Also if you want to make your system faster you should look into SSDs. Game performance is going to be limited by your GPU.

More than 4GB of RAM is not going to make games any faster on your laptop. The limiting factor is going to be the GTS 360M, which isn't great.

Hey buddy, got a question (also saw your post on the steam forums). You're using an Nvidia gts 360m right? I have an asus g51jx with a core i7 720QM and the same nvidia card.

How do you manage to play without any stutter on Black Ops? I'm getting some insane stuttering and fps drops randomly.

Return it and get that G72 back. They work great with 8GB (especially running VMware) and the nvidia 260 is better than the 360.

I don't have any issues at all playing black ops on my g73jh. No stuttering or lag problems. I haven't done anything special to my laptop other than install new vbios and drivers. I have everything set to the highest settings in-game too.

    Cheers!

well this laptop the ''g60jx'' runs black ops at max settings 4xaa with 0 stutter/lagg or fps drops , thats why i love it ,

PS : i didnt do any kind of tweking .

and the g72gx runs the game with alot of stutters/lagg and fps drops , but at the same time the g72gx have a better display and memory and speakers and runs wayyyyyyyyyyy cooooolllleeerrr than the g60jx

so i really dont know what to do :(

and yeh i created a thread in steam forums about which laptop i buy the acer or asus , ad which one will run black ops better XD

but how did you know that ? XDD

yes i have it , i recieved it yestaerday :) , there is no keyboard lagg at all , i play the game perfectly with everything on max aa 4x resolution 1366 x 768

i have mini freez only in the first 5 seconds of my first game and then everything is perfect !

but the cpu tempratures is really high it reaches 76c , i am really worried about this , but beside that , it is great !
