    Hi,

I have an ASUS G51J 3D laptop and I have already upgraded some components :
    - 2 HDD 500Go 7200t/min to SSD OCZ Vertex Turbo
    - 4GO 1066MHz RAM to G-Skill 4GO 1333MHz RAM
    - intel i7 720QM to intel i7 820QM
My BIOS is on the lastest version (208).

Now I just wanted to "upgrade" my CPU from i7 820QM to i7 640M, don't tell me it's dumb, I have my reasons. After putting in the new CPU with good thermal paste, when I tried to boot up, I had a blank screen only nothing appears :(

So I put my i7 820QM back and it works fine. Anyone has any idea ? Is my new CPU dead or my BIOS doesn't support i7 640M CPU?

Though I admit defective CPUs are quite rare, the most likely is your BIOS may not support the Arrandale i7s (dual core). If you exchanged it CPU for another one and it still doesn't work I would go with incompatibility.

    OK thank you!
Is there any solution to enable my BIOS working with Arrandale CPUs ?
Or should I just sell my new CPU ? :'(

Quad core laptops (820QM) can be down graded to dual core laptops (640M)?

    Learn something new everyday.

Was that an attempt at sarcasm?

As for OP's original issue, it maybe ASUS has restricted it to Clarksfield quad core i7s, perhaps you might want to ask a moderator to move this to the ASUS subsection and you might be able to get more help. AFAIK all Core i can be upgraded to one another barring IGP chipsets.

Most Asus quad core laptops can not support dual core, however, there is one model the N82JQ can go from Quad to Dual core:
