I've had my G51JX-A1 since 2010 and it has the nVidia GeForce GTS 360M graphics card. A few days ago, out of nowhere and during light usage, my display froze up and was followed by a blue screen saying something along the lines of "Windows attempt at recovering the graphics driver has failed." Since then, any time I try to boot up, I either get on the "Welcome" screen or not long after coloured dots or lines, a black screen, freezing, or any combination of that, followed by the blue screen described above, but I also sometimes get one that says something like "Windows has encountered an unrecoverable hardware error." I've formatted my disc and reinstalled Windows with no luck. Removing the nVidia drivers and running on the basic VGA graphics adapter works, but whenever I install any version of the drivers for the nVidia card, I get the same problem. I've opened up the bottom of the laptop and the card looks intact, but it's hard to see without removing the heatsink. Any ideas on what the problem might be or what I could do to fix it? If any more information is needed, I can provide that.

Dots and lines soumd lile gpu memory died also it could be cold solder issue with gpu. There is no software fix for this as both are hardware failures. If it cold solder issue gpu could be fixed via process called reballing but if its memory i'm afraid there is no help. If your notebook has removable gpu best thing to do would be buying replacement.

Given those symptoms, I would put my money on a bad GPU.

You should be able to find a new GPU eBay.

Thanks for the replies. The GPU is removable, but I've already looked rather extensively online and cannot find it. I've only found the same model laptop and a similar model that has the same GPU, all selling for $400+ (most closer to 1000). I'm not sure if I could even contact Asus to get a new one, even if I have to pay for it. How would the reballing process be done?

Reballing may not fix the issues since it can be the solder between the package and the die that is faulty, re-balling is best done by a specialised machine.

That or if possible save for a new system, haswell will offer faster integrated graphics.

C4RN1, thanks for that! I bought that graphics card, put it in a couple days ago (was a pain to replace) and it's been running smoothly since then. Seems to not be getting as warm as before, possibly from my application of the thermal compound, so everything is good.

Glad to hear everything is back to normal. I've bought a handful of g50's, 51's,and 60's to experiment with and repair, plus i've fixed a handful of nbr members g series just to help them out. It's pretty sad such an awesome looking laptop has such a poorly designed cooling system and thermal profile. You should look into the g51 cooling thread and get some ideas.

I'll probably be buying another broken g51vx soon, I might try a few more cooling mods.

Keep monitoring your temps with either gpu observer and core temp (core temp gadget) or hwinfo and you'll be able to see problems before they get too serious.
