I'm looking for my 1st laptop. I'm a work at home investor - spend majority of my day with 10 - 15 windows (financial programs and news) open at any point in time, with graphs and charts from different sights. Not a gamer, but want speed, quality screen w/ good clarity, and easy to use keyboard/touchpad.
Any thoughts, pro & con, on the ASUS G53?
As an aside, I've seen the G53-SW review here and on the Asus web site. However, I see a G53-JW on the Office Depot web site (have a $500 credit w/ Office Depot that I need to use). But, don't see the JW on the Asus web site. Anyone know what the difference is, or should I be concerned.
This is my first post. Thanks for the help.

the JW is mostly the same save for the last gen CPU but with your demand it should be more than sufficient enough although I'd recommend some other model smaller, more portable as you're not into gaming and dont do anything GPU heavy.
-
By smaller do you mean maybe I-5/I-3 proc., or smaller screen size? I usually have 2 - 3 windows up, side by side, so I don't think I want to go any smaller than the 15.6. But, let me know what you think.
Do you mind me asking if you use a G53 model, and if so, what is your opinion?
Thanks for the quick response. -
by smaller I meant size in general as the G-series tend to be quite bucky, look for other laptops with similar processor and screen size in N/U series or something else. Also 4kg/8lbs is not light if you carry it around alot.
Im using a G53SW right now and quite satisfied with it because I play quite a few heavy games and dont move the laptop around much if at all.
And of course its just my opinion -
The G53JW is okay. It has pretty much handled everything I throw at it. the SW version has a faster cpu so it would be more than enough for all your needs. It's heavy though. But if you're just working at home its a GREAT desktop replacement.

One more, if you don't mind. I've read in the reviews, and seen some things in the ASUS threads about the keyboard 'flex' and issues with touchpad a buttons. Any comments on these issues?
Thanks for the opinions. Believe me it helps. -
flex? hmmm.. When I got my laptop there wasn't any flexing at first. it only started after I dissembled and put her back together. Now there is a little flexing.. But you ask me it's really not that bad.. I hardly notice it.. And for the touchpad issues maybe its just me but I haven't had any problems really. Most of the time i just use the Razer mouse that came with the laptop.
To tell you the truth I haven't had any major problems with the G53JW. I fell in love with her the first time I met her and that hasn't changed ^^ -
Other then for gaming I wouldn't really reccomend the g53 the keyboard does have a bit of flex and the trackpad can definately be finicky. I mean don't get me wrong it is a great laptop but mostly if your into gaming and can overlook some flaws. For serious office us there are much better options. I bought it mainly for gaming and was hoping to use it for photo editing this year in art school but the weight and screen are gonna make that not possible.

Thanks to all - comments are much appreciated -
I may explore a different direction w/ the required's being I7 proc, 15 - 16" screen size, 1900x1080 res, 6 - 8gb ram, min. 500gb hard drive. I want this to be advanced enough that it's not archaic in a year.
But, from the comments provided, maybe a little more consideration for lower weight/size than the G53 (this is not a desk top replacement for me; it's for moving around the house, working while at kid's practices...).
thanks again -
If moving around the house is your requirement I will highly discourage you from the G53. What you are looking for is a laptop that is much lighter than the G53. If cpu processing power is your consider how about looking up the HP DV6? I'm guessing you will want the latest i7 CPU, 8gb ram, 1080p screen. The ati 6770m should last you a few years at least since you don't play games.

Appreciate the comments all. Sort of leaning back towards my original preference of Sony VAIRO F22 series. Pretty much same specs, but a w/ a 16.4" screen, but lighter weight. Only drawback is I can't take advantage of the $500 credit I have at Office Depot where the G53-JW is offered, but the
F22 is not.
From what I can tell while trolling the msg boards, there are issues with just about every brand/model. So, like everything else, try to keep searching for perfection.
thanks again
ASUS G53 - Thoughts appreciated
