The title sort of says it all.
When I am playing a game that uses 90-95% GPU usage like SC 2 my GPU temps can get pretty high.
I used MSI after burner and GPUZ/CPUZ to look at my GPU and CPU temps while gaming and this is what i found.
For example in SC 2 If i let it sit on the menu screen my GPU usage is about 90%. It will slowly rise to about 85C, then dance around 85-86 but soon as it hits 87C (if even just for a second) my computer goes into hibernation mode.
I have done many tests, and they all show at exactly 87C my computer goes into hibernation.
Is there a way to raise this pre-set value to something more realistic like say 95C?
Is there a way to stop it from going into hibernation mode and just to keep on letting it rise?
Is there a way to force 100% fan speed on the GPU?
I do not want to re-paste for it takes time, and you can damage your laptop and void warranty. And if you bring it in, it cost money.
Thanks for reading.

First things first use compressed air to clean out your fans and make sure there is no dust blocking the vents. If you are within warranty and it continues you could send it in for a repaste, if you are out of warranty and want some fun and are confident to have a go at repasting yourself here is Gentech's Dissassembly video.
Cleaning out the fans normally does the job though many have seen a very good decrease in temps by removing any dust that is prevent proper cooling. -
I really don't want to re-paste or send it in.
Is there no way to change that 87C? I read that it is only suppose to shut down at 100C.
Is there anyway way using software to help me? -
However as mentioned above first thing you need to do is to clean out the vents and fans, get some compressed air and blow the vents out with short sharp burst to not damage the fans. This should hopefully fix the problem and it could just be dust related. -
hmm wierd, as i have the same laptop g53jw i have NEVER EVER experianced a shutdown(lucky me ?) but when i used to reach 93c (which is themax i reached using furmark) i get 2 fps drops thats all what happens(also it is overclocked as you can see in my signature).
but i am pretty sure repasting will help alot....
about the shutdown you are experiancing i belive it is your cpu maybe ? because starcraft is cpu intensive game
so you might wanna check your cpu tempratures also .... and post it in here.
PS:there is a program to force your fans to run @ 100% and i am using it and it runs fine(you have to shutdown your laptop to return it to its default) you can find it in the forum but i am lazy to search the forum now...

Also is the prorgram R W? I have tried it and it made no sense, it is all hex and stuff. -
Clean the vents and post back if this does not show an improvement. -
Alright, tonight I will go buy an air can.
I don't have to take anything apart right, i just have to point it straight and close and do multiple short 1 second bursts right? -
Yea 87 seems too low for thermal shutdown; however, have you applied the SCII menu fix?? It might be contributing to the problem.
-
COD black ops (takes time)
Other games hit 84, but i don't play them long enough to cause issues. -
StarCraft II overheating fix | PC Gamer
I am not so certain what the main problem is, but this should at least help with SCII. -
Short blasts of air not constant otherwise you could damage the fans having them spinning faster than they should be. -
i for sure it is the GPU heat. Because if i lower the res it plays at, it never shuts down. It is only if i play at high res -> high heat.
-
the RW program i am uing yes correct, also i am having 0 problems with it and it is AWESOME ! it makes my laptop ICE COLD and yes it makes defference (i said that because i had experiance withn this program and it totally helps).

i finally found the link. just reacd the instruction and do it it is very very simple ....... really very simple ..
also do this after yu clean your vents also make sure your laptop is turned off while you are cleaning your vents ...
good luck and let me know ! -
Cons: Constant noise, increase in fan wear and possible failure, the G series becomes unstealthy.
If you want to lower your temps clean out the fans and look at conducting a repaste with some new compound because there is no need to have the fans running at 100% the fans are set to increase RPM depending on what temperature it is currently sitting at and the fans can only do so much. -
Ok so here is the update.
I bought a air can (every place had none for like 2 days!), and blew into every "air vent" on the bottom, just to clean it up, and get rid of any dust on the laptop.
Then i spent about 4 mins, doing quick sprays into both the back vents, making sure all dust is out and such.
Then i performed a few tests.
I let it stand on the sc 2 menu for a long time, and it stayed around 83C this time, which is great.
Black ops, was also lower which was awesome.
Then for a true test I overclocked the card to 800/1600/1450.
I let it stand on the sc 2 menu this time at a res of 1920x1200 which gave a GPU usage of 99% with no dips. The card peeked after about 7 mins at 90C WITH NO SHUT DOWN!!!!! And when gaming in sc 2 it averages about 86C.
I then tried black ops, and it heated up the graphics card good, about 85C and also, no shut down!
So all my problems seem to be fixed. -

Ok, seriously lol SCII shouldnt be getting that hot, period. Yet alone in the MENU. Did you apply the fix I linked??
-
i just dont know why it should be over heating. I just bought this laptop like 6 months ago and only used it for school, no gaming until now.

The day after I got to work and it was hitting 80oC.
It takes a highly paid experienced technician to build an Asus Laptop, but it takes someone with a brain to make it work properly.
Consider a repaste if you are not happy with your temps start researching asap. There is a lot to learn and understand. Many people will tell you it is not the thermal compound making a difference. Ignore them. It most likely will be the thermal compound because the way in which its applied by Asus. Crap.
If you are going to consider it work your way through this lot. I personally recommend ICD or Shin Etsu when you buy a compound.
