Well, I'd say buy it. It's a nice laptop. It'll do a lot of things. But if you're wondering what I think of my other comments about my laptop, well ... I havn't changed my mind.

I'm not sure where you're getting these "many" bad experiences from b/c it's pure fiction. There's one issue that affected a tiny portion of customers and that was the A/C adapter not operating properly. It's a spectacular laptop and is very much worth getting.

If you get the standard HD screen that I have it is indeed bad but I have no heat issues and it never shuts down by itself.
    Get it.

You'll always see bad reviews for any laptop.

People who get the one lemon in the production line--or PEBKAC it themselves--will complain the loudest.

I've been doing even more research on the ASUS G53/73 series laptops and I don't think you'll have any major problems. I've been looking at the G53JW-A1 from XoticPC and it's such a good deal for me. It only costs a little more than Best Buy's BST7 model but with even more features that the BST7 is missing. The bigger G73JW-XR1 model is only half a hundred dollars more than the G53JW-A1 there if you want that. I think it's worth it since it comes with a 2-year global warranty and 1-year accidental damage already as well. I'm not sure if there is any other laptop like this for this price around.

The screen is beautiful @ 1080 HD.

Don't let people tell you otherwise. It's very bright, the colours are great (unless you're a professional photographer, then they get really picky) and you can read all the text very clear.

People haven't really seen a bad screen until they see MSI's GX640/740 @ 1366 res with 1/2 the brightness of an Asus.

Heh, the screen of the g73s is nicer! :p

    Honestly.

But the g53 is a nice setup.

I'd say it's fine, but I'm not a photographer. I do however compose electronic music, use business apps, game and do school work on it, and found the screen to be spectacular.

XPS is said to have a better screen if you upgrade it, but you'd be losing alot of gaming performance since the Gcard. You're going to have to pic better screen vs gaming :p XPS is not the best screen out there b/c there's the HP's Dreamcolour, Alienware 17, MacBookPro ...and a few more ahead of it (something like 5 laptops ahead of it in a list I read) :)

Yeah, if you're talking about the 1366 screen, then it's garbage :p If you're talking about the 1080, then it's great :)

I would avoid Asus laptops. Learn from my experience.

I originally bought a G71GX-A1. It lasted three months. The fan went bad and started making loud grinding sounds. I sent it in and it took TWO MONTHS for them to send me a replacement. It was a G72GX-A1. It's almost the same laptop, except it has two 500GB HDD and not two 320GB HDD. I was fairly pleased, until about three months ago when my replacement started making the same sound as my old G71. I found that cleaning the fan stopped it, but it was only a band-aid fix. The sound would eventually return. Now, the sound happens no matter if it's clean or not. I'm in the process of sending it back now. I find it sad that I need a replacement for my replacement laptop.

The specs are awesome on Asus laptops, so I know how tempting they are, but they are NOT worth it. Avoid them.

Actually it's your fault for RMA'ing to the repair center instead of using a local ASP center. I keep telling everyone this, and everyone keeps sending it away for the 1-2 months, instead of the 1-2 weeks at an ASP.

@ynobody01: they replaced your first unit with a newer model, and they're fixing the 2nd unit. Some companies don't even get that far.

Mine has never shut down, has zero heat problems (actually has excellent cooling) and the screen is very good on my unit (1080p).

This screen will work fine for what you want. If you are serious about photo and video editing you should buy a larger external (or multi-screen) display anyway - a 15'' laptop screen probably wont cut it for professionals.

It's an Authorized Service Provider where you can go into the store and they have been authorized by ASUS to fix your laptops without voiding warranty.

Anyway to look that kind of place up? My only guess is maybe the local Best Buy because they sell Asus laptops there, but I wouldn't trust Best Buy to fix it. They would probably charge me like $200 too.

ASUS doesn't really repair the laptops and Geek Squad really just looks up info and tries to fix it or just replace your laptop from my experience. You can use the ASUS site to look up the ASPs: ASUS Notebook Authorized Service Provider

Yeah, I found that page, but none of them are exactly close by. The closest one only seems to repair Asus notebooks purchased from them.

PS - I hate not seeing the next page of posts

If they are an ASP, you call Asus customer support, get an RMA#, and arrange for that location to fix it. Basically, Asus will pay them for your fix.

Also, I believe the G53JW-A1 doesn't require a repaste with IC Diamond and that stock will work just fine because the temps are the same from what I've seen.

    Gah HERESY!

Seriously folks, just make sure it's done by someone competent. I saw that poor chap who had it done by Asus tech, and his temps went from 96C to 91C.... what a waste, and kept his ICD7.

I only knew that from a BTOTech video and they seem pretty confident but I don't see a lot of data backing up that supposed fact that a thermal repaste isn't required for G53JW. Also doesn't look like the G53 is much smaller than the G73.
