So I looked up this issue and a couple people have tried a few things and I can't get either to work. The magnet trick fails and unplugging the touch pad doesn't do crap either. I guess I should just return it?

Really? 40 people read this and not a single one could post their thoughts?

It looks like you've eliminated the magnetic switch as a cause for your "boot to black screen" issue. These usually result from a hardware problem. You can troubleshoot further by attaching your laptop to an external monitor or HDTV. If the TV displays video and the laptop display doesn't, the problem may be your LVDS cable connection, LVDS cable, or the laptop display. If both fail to display video, it may indicate a problem with your Video Graphics Adapter.

Some have temporarily resolved this issue by unplugging, removing the battery and all peripheral devices, holding the Power-On button down for 30 seconds, then plugging in and booting the laptop. Others have wiggled the lid of the laptop or pressed on different areas to get video to appear on the laptop display. However, the issue usually returns...

Some have reported they resolved the issue by completely disassembling and reassembling the laptop. See @Yemon's post: http://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?11968-G73JH-Black-screen-(&p=86803&viewfull=1#post86803. Of course, no one could guarantee you'd have the same experience if you attempted this on your laptop.

If you just purchased the laptop, I recommend exchanging it or returning for a complete refund. If you are beyond your retailer's exchange/return policy, but still under warranty, an RMA will be your most cost-effective choice for repair.

Thanks for the info, seeing that the laptop has just arrived I emailed the seller and they are taking care of return shipping as well as a full refund. That being said I'm now considering a new G55 or 1080P Y580?
