Hi, if I got a G55VW with a Core i7-3630QM now, could I upgrade it to say... a QX version later on?

    Thanks.

You mean xm version I suppose, the answer is yes you can, but you may not get the unlocked multipliers, it depends whether your BIOS will allow it. My G73Jh allowed me to change the multiplier past the stock clock of the 920xm, but my M6700 won't allow me to do that if I ever choose to get a 3940xm. You'd have to ask Asus (their guys answering the phone likely won't know though) or wait for someone who has done it to chime in.

Sandy and Ivy need bios support, but the first generation I7s don't.

The XM will run but not be overclockable.

I would like to see if someone put in a 3940xm CPU in this laptop. Maybe some people will in a few years when the high end CPUs get cheaper.

A 3840qm would make a lot more sense.

Yeah any CPU at 2.8GHZ base clocks or higher and upper 3.xxGHZ max Turbo would be an ideal upgrade option. Wondering which CPUs the BIOS really supports since I can't find anyone that's done an upgrade.

You will be fine with a 3840qm since it shares the same TDP.

    The XM version should work?
You could actually select that CPU when building it on XOTICPC.

Maybe a year down the line I'll install a 3940XM.

Yes but it gets you an extra 100mhz and nothing else for a lot more cash.
