To all who need it or are interested, BIOS 1201 for the ASUS G71GX is now available (as of this post, ASUS hasn't put an official link out, but I found the URL to it). The BIOS file is on the official ASUS download server so I assume it is the official release. I take no responsibility for what happens using their file.

To download it, it is available at:
    http://dlsvr.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/G71Gx/G71GX-ASUS-1201.zip

Please see Edit 2 and Edit 3 for update instructions.
    ASUS WinFlash is available at:
    http://dlsvr.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/Apps/WinFlash/WinFlash_VT_080722.zip

To update your BIOS, please visit this website for details:
    http://support.asus.com/technicaldocuments/technicaldocuments.aspx?no=195&SLanguage=en-us

Please update to the this BIOS (ASUS and several users claim it fixes the throttling issue). Also, anyone who is willing, please write up a detailed review of the notebook after you have updated the BIOS. Thanks! :D

Edit 1: I accidently put the wrong link to the BIOS update, it has now been corrected. Please make sure the file you downloaded is G71GX-ASUS-1201.zip or else it is not the correct update. I appologize for the mistake I made.

Edit 2: It appears that WinFlash doesn't work, you need to use EZ Flash from a flash drive.
Edit 3: Appears that the WinFlash method does indeed work, but you need to have the BIOS on a flash drive.

I downloaded the update, started WinFlash and flashed. When it restarted, it came up with an error message "error occurred while reading the file"

I have the G71GX-RX05, anyone else having the same problem. Thanks for the help guys.

Where exactly is it saying "error occured while reading the file"? Did you select the "Load Optimal Defaults" option in the BIOS menu after flashing?

lol, I have the entire box set of crysis installed so that once I get it fixed I can put it through the paces. The only problem is that WinFlash wont read the ROM properly...

You might want to try using the DOS method or it is possible that the BIOS file on the ASUS download server isn't ready (but I don't know why it would be on there if it wasn't).

When i select "Flash", it restarts the computer and enters the "MS-DOS" style (sorry, lack of a better word, my terminology is not up to par) and immediately gives me the error message. I then pressed the spacebar and the computer booted up the OS

EDIT: is the EZ Flash option in the setup the "Dos version" and could I use that to install the new BIOS. I just worry about bricking the computer. I def dont wanna do that to a new machine. NEWB ALERT :)

Same here...basically the Winflash utility doesnt flash this ROM file while in Vista...it asks you to hit FLASH and when you do it says it will reboot and flash the BIOS. But...when the Lappy reboots it starts the DOS level FLASH routine and says "Error reading the file"

yeah, I was thinking about DLing the V2.11 and seeing if that would help. I'm not a big fan of the 64bit version, so immediately I feel like its a complication in that regard. My two cents, I dont have any evidence :)

Ok, I went through the EZ Flash 2 program in DOS, and I received the error "Boot block in file is not valid". I don't have a clue what that means, but its news i guess.

Make sure you run the bios off of a Jump drive IE USB stick :)

Also use EZ flash to do so , reboot and hit i think its F3 cant remember now but you will see the message pop up on what key to hit .

If your not seeing the option its because you have the Asus logo that pops up and covers up the bios screen upon boot so disable that in the bios options you will see it in there.

That bootblock error is because your running it straight from the harddrive

    Hope this helps .

Quadzilla was right...when I ran it off the USB stick...it loaded OK. Sooooo...I tested the new 1201 BIOS and stress tested it with Furmark and allowed the GPU temp to rise above 90 Deg C without any framerate reduction. Wooohoo!

I just updated using WinFlash, selected the rom from USB drive and it restarted to a program that did the BIOS flash and then loaded OS. Going to get 3dmark06 to test.

Sorry for noob question, what is EZ Flash?

So I put BIOS on USB Stick, reboot, press F3, go into BIOS and update or what? Not sure what EZ Flash and Winflash are for, especially if Winflash isn't working.

You can start up WinFlash, select the BIOS that's on your USB drive, click to restart the G71 and then it'll automatically load EZ Flash and flash/check the BIOS and continue loading the OS.

But I think people are finding it at asus.com now so you could check there if you want.

No i decided to upgrade a little to what i had originally had planned .

    Its in my sig .

I know this will be a great machine though but after the W90 fiasco then the G71 having an issue i just wasnt prepared to deal with Asus this round ,i still think and know its a great machine so i hope everyone is happy with there purchase. Cant wait to see some benchmarks etc :).

I hoped those instructions worked out for those that needed them since i had flashed that old bios to the G71 the first day i had gotten it and knew the procedure .

    I got 10,074 on 3DMark06 using stock drivers, 10.6kish using DOX 185.85
Both times the gpu temp didn't go above 82C though, had to OC the CPU to 10% in order to get 89C on the GPU temp.

I'd imagine it gets hot, all gaming laptops do my old E1705 with an X1400 got hot after playing a while..

Just purchase a laptop cooler..I played COH for a few hours straight and then restarted to see the temp... it wasn't over 60 C

I didn't know what I was missing until I played games with this new rig...MAss Effect-flawless.. COX plays fantastic!

Note: after checkings boards the asus update software gave me 1102 or something to that effect BIOS update... I'm going to try the avenues offered in this thread later tonight

    Ya, you are right...

I guess what I mean is does the g71 get as hot as the g51? What are the temps after the bios update? Do they get in the upper 90's like the g51?

    Thanks!

Last night I hit only 79 after playing Crysis for like 40min. However, if the room temp is a little higher and after 2-3 hours of gaming I'd except the machine to hit 85ish max. I mean the fan wasn't running max when I was playing.

Also with a notebook cooler I'd except this to never even go over 80. What what I have seen and heard this def runs cooler than the G51.

In the instructions from the OP, it said to choose, 'Load Optimal Settings' from the BIOS, but all I had on the exit screen was 'Load Setup Defaults'. Is that what I am suppose to choose?

It does say the BIOS is 1201.

use the Asus update, its yellow-greenish in your task bar, you just right click hit update.. a window appears with 1201. You need to check the box marked 1201 and hit update. Once its done another dialog box will appear infront of the Asus update box telling you once you hit "ok" it will reboot the machine and perform the BIOS update.

Upon reboot a colored DOS-looking screen apprears lookling like old Lynix. At the bottom you'll see a bar with text explaining its updating BIOS etc. Then once thats done you're BIOS screen will appear. You'll see that your Bios is @ 1201. Just load set up default BIOS. And save and exit

I think am considering to get one, but after the Crisis that happened to my Dear trusty Laptop (which was an electric Flaw in the house that fried half of the electronics we have) am a lil scared of Gaming laptops due to them getting hot, i mean hitting 90s with a single Card configuration is quite hot dont you think? the max with my old SLI setup was like 82

Laptop coolers do help with the temps and also undervolting with the guide by TevashSzat mentioned here:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=401345

Asus says that the heat is not a problem and you should have long life on the laptop. They even have an overclocking utility made by themselves (Asus made it) that's covered in the warranty as well.

I recently purchased (2) Asus G71GXs. I've been reading over these forums and I've learned there was a throttling problem. I have tried to download the BIOS Update 1201. I received an error stating that my BIOS is more up to date than that version. My question is, are the newer models that are being shipped out as of 20 Aug 09 updated already and running the correct BIOS?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Mine bought ends of july had already the 1201 from factory. Probably newer models might come with more recent bios (1701 i think its the latest), thats what i runing atm, and no problems at all. You can skip the initial screen to see the version of bios u runing at.

    Awesome!

Thank you very much. Less hassle for me. This (these) are my first Asus, I was recommended to get them from my brother who knows quite a bit. I'm looking to get into Aion and since they claim that it will be one of the most visual enhanced games out there I wanted to get that full effect.

    Thanks for the information.
