is the ASUS G71GX-A1 a Solid computer? Or should i try to go with something else? I'd like to go with the sager 5797 is a little out of my reach. Any other reccomendations?
My wanted specifications
Under $2.15k USD (including customization + shipping+Taxes)
Quad Core (i like the overclockability of the MSI and ASUS to 2.5)
DON'T BOTHER TRYING TO GET ME TO SWITCH TO DUAL CORE, I HAD A
Ram= DDR3
WHOLE THREAD ABOUT IT
Top-line (or near) Graphics card
Solid build (Like a sager)
17"+
I considered the G70 until i realized it has two crap cards in SLI... Why would ASUS not just put one top of the line card in there? it would be a WAY better computer, and possibly even cheaper!

RainMotorsports Formerly ClutchX2
G71 is newer and there are current G71 models its not an entirely new release model like the G51 is. -
Oh. damn. but still, is it a good computer? nice and solid? (the one from xotic PC)

RainMotorsports Formerly ClutchX2
As far as i know uses the G70/G71 chassis and probably shares parts here and there so look at some reviews. -
i don't think its out yet, it uses 6GB-ddr2-800 however, should this be a problem? i think the extra 2GB versus 4GB-ddr3-1033 should be ABOUT the same, right?
-
As far as I know, there isn't much of a performance difference between DDR2 and DDR3 RAM in the laptop world. (this is not the case for GPU VRAM though!)
-
that's what i thought. Thanks E.B.E..
nobody has really answered the question of how solid ASUS builds are. -
That depends on the model. Arguably they are in general pretty good, although the quality has been going down somewhat in the past years. (and they have EOL-ed many business-series notebooks with excellent build quality)
-
I currently have a G71V-Q1 (first of the C2Q's). It is a pretty solid machine. The only thing I have an issue with is the plastic hinge covers as it prone to damage. I have damaged mine and at some point will send it in to get repaired. It is and has been rock solid. I think the 6GB of RAM will be helpful. I am looking to upgrade to 8GB of RAM on mine as I run dual VMs and with 4GB it does swap and gets sluggish.
You WILL need to consider a cooling pad. I've got the NZXT and it works perfectly fine for me. -
I have this on pre-order,, because it was recommended to me with consideration of the issues I have had with other Asus models regarding performance and GPU driver support.
The G71GX has everything I was looking for in a gaming notebook and I am hoping the same solid performance as my G1s has given me for 2 years now. My notebooks are powered on close to 8 hours+ a day, everyday. .. My G1s plays everything I throw at it since day one without a glitch. (of course after getting the MOBO replaced in the beginning)
And definitely a cooling pad is recommended for any high performance laptop. -
would have been a little cheaper through XoticPC.com RMP.
anyways, capreppy, link to that cooler? -
Some BestBuy's have already Asus G71 in stock.
In local BB (Chicago suburbs) I saw G71 with GTX260M and P8700 for $1150.
Build quality is similar to G50, almost whole laptop is in black/dark gray color. -
yeah, but we don't have a BB yet, and obviously CC went out of business (aaaand there goes my job)
we only have a semi-local BB warehouse. the actual store is being built though for August. I can't wait to get this laptop. I was thinking of a core i7 laptop, but its just too much to afford. Any recommendations on a cheap cooler under 50? -
I preordered mine from Ken @ GenTech ( http://1toppc.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=G71GX-A1) and I have recieved nothing short of amazing customer service from him. If you're looking to order online, I'd go to GenTech.
For the lappy itself: I think I'm paying a nice lump of money for something that historically hasnt had many problems with it aside from some clicking noises heard in the A1's which was fixed by a driver, I havent heard anything bad. I'm glad I switched my order from a W90VP to this, at the current moment, of course. =] -
dude if u are going to spend over 2 k then u should get this
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220527
is a lot better then the g71 -
brunoroc- thanks for showing me that laptop, but i'm not too keen on the lack of driver support mentioned
-
so why dont u get a AW with dual 260GTX SLi ? it will be under 2.15k
-
oh, as for a cooler; I was thinking about this - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834997340
its pricey but I mean, im spending x-amount of money on this beast laptop, I'd rather not skimp the last 20 feet of the way and buy some crap cooler thats gonna either a) fail b) suck.
And I'm not smart enough to build my own cooling system so, hehe. -
can you show me where this is? i only see the crossfire model -
its called m17x
right here http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&oc=dkcwqt1&s=dhs&~lt=alienware
it is actually 2099,00 with the dual 260GTX -
well so far it seems only the G71gx has a dual lamp screen.. thats worth a lot to me.
-
from what i heard the AW has the dual lamp too...
check out the AW forum -
Yea heard from where? I know AW has "dual lamp" all over the place for the specs but in reality people have been complaining the screen is dim and washed out. Also light leakage in only the bottom part of the lcd. All signs so far point to a single lamp screen not dual as advertised. So unless I am wrong only the G71 has the dual lamp for sure.
-
OH. aw=alienware. there is also 200 bucks shipping, which puts it over the top, no thanks anyways ;o I think i might get the asus. kinda falling for it
-
i heard from ppl at the AW forum ...
dude dual 260GTX will destroy a single one -
yes, i'd love to have one but i can't afford it
-
just save some money and get it....
oh by the way BB is getting the g71 model this week and the price start at 1150 with p8700, 6gb ram, and 500 hdd -
and I'd advise against Alienwares. My friends and I all have had our share of problems with them. Asides from the ridiculous overpricing; customer service sucks and is nearly non-existent, you can get the same computer (spec wise) cheaper and with better warranties, and mine, along with two of my friends, died within 6-8 months, so I call alienware unreliable, unnecessary and unfairly priced.. But I believe I feel a little of my biased loathing coming through on that so, maybe someone with a better track record with them should speak for it.
EDIT: I just went on AW's webby to customize their m17x to be what my ASUSG71GX would be and the grand total would be $3522, with 3yr warranty but without shipping. (I preordered my asus at 2400 with shipping and warranty)Hm...
Of course, my two cents. =] -
Nope. Confirmed to have GTX 260m with P8700, 6 GB DDR2, and 500 GB HDD (single). I think it's 1440x900 res though, maybe thats one factor and the 6-cell battery (assumption). No blu-ray. But come on, $1150? That's good stuff lol.
-
-
Ah, thanks for the heads up, David and tgf5. =]
Looking at the BB version, I would recommend the downgraded version to a lot of people I know. Seems like a good bang for the buck and doesn't include excess stuff that some people really don't need. -
is the BB version dual lamp?
-
Nope i doubt it will have the dual lamp as i think thats only for the WUXGA models , if it was using the same inverter though as the Dual lamp model then you could buy the screen and slap it in yourself.
-
AUO makes 1400x900 dual lamp LCD panels, but because of the high price, I doubt those will be on the BB G71s.
-
sorry guys but what is dual lamp?? im presuming thats it is really good
-
yeah makes the screen brighter, more vibrant and crisp.. generally very pleasing to the eyes compared to normal single lamp lcds which are dim and can be washed out looking.
-
cmo makes dual lamp 1440x900 screens.. best ive ever seen for a notebook
-
i don't know a dang thing about screens haha
-
What about the OLED on top of the keyboard? I hope they keep that even though they took out the keyboard backlighting
-
-
-
-
Ken,
For clarification, are you referring to the BB model or the GenTech model? Or possibly both. -
-
-
i wanted one of the g70's but meh. apparently from the way you guys are talking, it's older and outdated
-
-
no way. can you show me?
I was agreeing that its too bad the classic is outdated... if there is a 70 with the same specs as the 71, i'd love to see it -

Awe, i guess i can't get one with the same specs. That's ok. I just like the programmable keys on it, not so much the blinking lights on it. I'd only like it if could turn the lights on and off as i wanted. IE if i want to show it off or whatever..
/sigh. i guess i have to settle for the G71
