Not sure if this is normal, but it is a recent occurrence. (I purchased the laptop this past summer and have had very few issues, I love it) When starting up my laptop, the fan (at least I think it's the fan, it may be something else) is INCREDIBLY noisy. I live in a small dorm and I'm pretty sure my neighbors can hear it. It's like a lawnmower. After a minute or two it calms down and is quiet, but I'm wondering if there might be something wrong or if this is something that can be ignored? Thanks!

start, run, type in msinfo32 and hit enter. The most stable is bios 211. Check my signatures for help. While ur at it, u should update your vbios as well.

step by step is in the gsod tutorial.

Do you have a cd in the tray? They can make quite a bit of noise as well.

THe bearing might be going out...

If possible get a sound clip of it..

I had the Bearing go out on my unit once already... less than 20 hours into owning the computer.

Shouldn't be the BIOS. (209 runs the fans quieter than 211). Do you hear a whining noise, clicking noise or just straight out "vooooom"

It's just "vooooom", maybe a little bit of a whine as well.

Yeah I have something like that too, the GPU fan gets really loud a few seconds after turning the machine on, then goes back to normal after maybe 30 seconds or so. It started happening a couple of months after I got the laptop and I've been meaning to take it apart to check there are no obstructions in the fan. I've been putting it off for months though, on account of the rather tedious disassembly procedure. I've tried cleaning out the vents with compressed air, but I'm not sure if that really helped.

However, since I've started playing Assassin's Creed 2 a week ago the GPU has been overheating and causing the system to shutdown if I play for too long. So I'm going to repaste the GPU today and will take a look at that fan. If I manage to put everything back together I'll let you know if I find anything.

Well, I've managed to repaste the GPU and put it all back together. But the fan noise is still there, and I didn't find anything obstructing the fan.

Try to record the fan noise. So we can compare it.

MINE HAS STOPPED WORKING ( GPU FAN... )

AFTER 3 MONTHS ONLY, brand new Asus G73sw (Best Buy Model)....

I Live in BRASIL and now I don't have any cooler here that fits my motherboard...

    IT's SOOOOO DISAPOINTING!!!!!!!!!!

I'm running it without the fan.... if I open any game, or high quality videos, the GPU reaches 87º, and if I continous playing/watching it reaches 105º and shutdown....

    what should I do?

Don't ever do that, the fan is not that expensive. You are only taking out significant amount of life from your 5870.

Your fan's part number is: KSB06105HB

If all the connections are ok and the fan is not clogged up or blocked then a new fan is needed for sure.

You will probably see 60-70oC at idle without a fan running as the heatsink and radiator will still draw the heat away from the GPU but without a fan the heat extraction is minimal. Just make sure you do not put any significant load on it at all if you are going to continue using it.
