Is there a common generally agreed to set of Firmware levels and drivers to update to that the majority of non gaming users can depend upon listed anywhere without getting into the "best of" debates.

Stability, cool running, and speed would be the prime requisites.

Expert opinions from folks who support the G73 would be welcomed here:

if you've read through these threads you have seen there are numerous opinions on several topics (update BIOS or not, update drivers or go stock, remove creative software or install latest realtek drivers etc...). Some people have problems, others have no issues.

On several of these and other topics there isn't even a consensus on how effective a particular approach is (or is not).

Even the most basic recommendation such as doing a clean install is not an absolute and is not a panacea for many of the difficulties described on this forum.

If you take some time and scan through some of the existing threads you can get a wide variety of suggestions and gain a bit of insight as to some of the experiences of your fellow G73 owners but you won't get a complete blueprint to gaming nirvana.

    Cheers,

I got this notebook mostly for my development work - as a mobile version of my desktop. Being able to play games at nice settings is just a nice bonus to me.

Aside from uninstalling a couple utilities I don't use, I find using everything stock from the Asus Drivers and Utilities disk works just fine. I'm currently running the ATI Catalyst 10.4 version just for fun, but the stock driver from Asus worked fine.

I do feel sorry for those who didn't get the disk, since it makes for an easy install on a fresh OS install...many of the items on the disk aren't on the Asus download site - at least not easy to find. I'm so tempted to host the ISO for download, but I don't need legal troubles :)

Thanks MarkS that's a useful perspective...

Now if the support guys would chime in we would have something.
